Funny. My coworker who took college in Egypt just said something along this line to me today.

Ogrim wrote:For those who read French, here is an interesting, longish article called Le libanais n'est pas un dialecte arabe (Lebanese is not an Arabic dialect). Basically the author claimes that Lebanese is not descending from Arabic, but should be considered a Semitic dialect/language descending from some proto-Semitic language and having evolved independently of other Semitic languages, including Arabic.

I have no idea whether this claim/theory is correct or not, but anyone more advanced in Arabic and Levantine dialects may have a view on the authors arguments.

He's wrong; this is pseudolinguistics used to push a nationalistic/sectarian narrative.

The author doesn't show a single regular sound change that would explain modern Levantine as a development of Canaanite (not even getting into the fact that before the spread of Arabic the Levant was Aramaic-speaking and Canaanite was extinct). All he does is cherry-pick.

The author also insists on comparing Levantine to Classical Arabic rather than to other Arabic vernaculars. In fact modern Arabic vernaculars are generally closer to each othet than any of them are to Classical Arabic; are we supposed to conclude then that Egyptian and Gulf Arabic are also Phoenician dialects?

That of course isn't to say that the Lebanese couldn't create their own written standard if they wanted to. Maltese is genetically Arabic but they don't use MSA and they have their own standard. There's no (linguistic) reason why Lebanon couldn't do the same.

So I am preparing for the next Super Challenge which I heard would be held about next month. Since my target languages are Arabic and Japanese, I want to watch some Japanese anime with Arabic subtitles. Can any of you give some links to download them for free? I heard from my friend who is a Japanese literature graduate that some of them are available on YouTube but with the keywords written in Arabic script. So if, say, I want to watch Digimon with Arabic subtitle on YouTube, what keywords should I use (in Arabic script)?

It's kind of a come and go thing, as you please - the study groups are here so we help each other out, so welcome!
