Allow me to assure you that is probably only with Harry Potter that I could do this. ;) And the first paragraphs in particular are easier than most as it is descriptions of a neighborhood and people, descriptions which are strongly etched into my memory. Still, I'm pretty pleased about it.

In Arabic news, my Levantine Arabic teacher was a no-show for both of our lessons. I'm more than a little grumpy. Dare I say that I am غاضبة? Though really I'm mostly annoyed. I am hesitant to call him out on it as his situation is a bit complicated and I am sympathetic, but... I have also paid for lessons and would actually like to have them.

Both of my Moroccan Arabic classes this week were excellent. It would be unfair to compare any other teacher to her, but, man, my Levantine Arabic teacher does not remotely measure up. My Moroccan teacher generally sends me a clip from a tv show or documentary or news report before our lesson that I then listen to (repeatedly). At the start of our lesson, she asks me what new words I heard or have questions about. She then directs me to words/passages that I might have missed before asking me questions about the videos. I find this extremely effective and am hoping (if my Levantine teacher ever shows up for a lesson again...) that I'll be able to do something similar with him.

Here's a clip from a Syrian tv-show that I've been watching on repeat in the hopes that I'll begin to figure it out:

I'll make my habib watch it later and give me some hints. Having context would help a lot. In the meantime, I'm happy to have picked out some of the Syrian Arabic words I read in Team Maha's Fusha to Shami pdf: http://teammaha.com/wp-content/uploads/ ... -Shami.pdf

Confidence Boosts & Weekly Goals

Postby Maiwenn » Mon Feb 05, 2018 10:41 pm

Last Week

Writing this bit in English as it's almost midnight. Last week, I binge watched Rdat lwalida (a Moroccan soap opera -- currently watching the final episode!). The first ten I watched with my partner, which was exceedingly helpful. After some trickier bits, he would stop the video and ask me what I understood. I wrote down new terms and phrases. It was a great confidence boost. This weekend, I had to call my in-laws and my sister-in-law exclaimed over how much my Moroccan Arabic had improved. Victoryyyy!

I'm thinking I might rewatch Rdat lwalida and write up episode summaries for fellow learners. We'll see.

German practice was mostly limited to Arte Journal watching and Harry Potter listening/reading. I did also write a friend a nice long email.

MSA studies were a bit of a bust as well. I listened to some news, that's all.

Last Week | Egyptian Movie | Weekly Goals

Postby Maiwenn » Mon Feb 12, 2018 8:35 pm

Letzte Woche | Last Week

Zuerst möchte entscheiden, was ich davon will.

I didn't read Al Moukhtarat, but I did all of my other weekly goals. My Moroccan Arabic classes are always great. I always look forward to these classes. I still haven't written to my new Fusha Arabic teacher. First I need to decide what I want from them. Do I want to speak in Fusha or Syrian Arabic? Of course I want to understand and read Fusha, but it is perhaps more practical to speak Syrian Arabic. I don't know....

A couple weeks ago I watch an Egyptian movie. It was called "Le Caire Confidentiel" in French (The Nile Hilton Incident in English). It is one of the best movies I've seen. Usually I don't choose "films polaires," but this movie was worth it.

Film "Wajib" & Wochenziele | Weekly Goals

Postby Maiwenn » Mon Feb 26, 2018 10:05 pm

Wajib

Last week I saw a Palestinian movie: Wajib. "Wajib" means "Duty." The movie takes place in Bethlehem, in a Christian family. The main character is a young man who works in Italy as an Architect. He has returned to Bethlehem, because he must help with the wedding of his sister. There is a tradition in Bethlehem, in which the Bride's family must invite guests in person. This tradition is a "Wajib": a duty. He does the Wajib with his father, who is a school teacher. Naturally there are some somewhat political themes, so I won't talk about them. ;) I liked the movie a lot -- it was funny and touching. It was a glimpse into a family and the relationship between father and son.

I made a discovery this week, spurred on by someone in this forum (so sorry, I can't remember who right now, I'll update later to give proper credit), that Netflix's Dark has an audio description track in German. It's great! I listened to an episode this way. I would NOT enjoy this if it were my first pass-through, but as re-listening practice, it is a vocabulary-rich experience.

(French) Amazon prime video has added Psych with lots of audio/subtitle options, so I've started watching episodes in German with Arabic subtitles. I wish there were an Arabic audio option, but I'll take what I can get.

Checking in

Postby Maiwenn » Mon Jul 16, 2018 5:09 pm

Hallo! !سلام! اهلا وسهلا

Life has been full of surprises since I last wrote. Not least of all, I've moved out of Alsace, though I'm still in the "Grand Est." I haven't touched German much since the move (the motivation is less immediate), though when I flew through Frankfurt recently airport vendors didn't switch to English with me. They assumed I understood them in German (not always the correct assumption... ;) ).

I've been feeling pretty confident in my Moroccan Arabic and I can't wait to visit Morocco soon for four weeks. I'm hoping to establish early on that my family-in-law should stick to Arabic with me. I figure, if I can discuss complex social issues with my teacher purely in Moroccan Arabic, then surely (with some patience on my in-law's part), I shouldn't need too many French translation assists.

In non-Moroccan-Arabic Arabic learning, I've been watching the Egyptian series "Grand Hotel" on Netflix with English subs. It's every bit the soap opera you would hope it to be. Secret love! Fake pregnancies! And fires! Oh my!

Re: Maiwenn auf Deutsch |2018| مايوين بالعربية

Arabic

Howdy all! It's been a while. I meant to write up about my four weeks in Morocco, but I kept putting it off and off and off. Well, it's been over two months now, so I'll just quickly summarize with: The trip went well. I spoke a lot of Arabic, much of it was understood. Four weeks is a long time. Now that I understand enough to follow along most of the time, some in-laws now find it funny to switch to Tachelhit. I would of course like to learn Tachelhit, but it's just not in the cards at the moment.

While there, I read through a book of North African stories in Arabic (with French translation on the opposing page). I read out loud to my partner when we were being beach bums. It was a very helpful exercise. Once I finished that, I continued on to the first Harry Potter (via kindle). My knowledge of Harry Potter did the heavy lifting, the embedded dictionary did the rest (oh how I love it! never used a kindle dictionary whilst reading before and it's so, so helpful). I tried procuring physical books, but it was difficult. I managed to get Arabic translations of 1984, The Alchemist, and some children's book. I also got a set of Arabic language textbooks intended for 9-11 year olds. I plan on working through them in 2019.

Since I've been back, I've mostly just been maintaining through in-law contact and not much else. I'm getting back in the groove now, however. I've dusted off my books and started back up with clozemaster.

Goal for this week:
Make a game plan for the rest of the year (what materials, daily tasks, etc).

Deutsch

I'm working my way through Thomas Meyer's Wolkenbruchs wunderliche Reise in die Arme einer Schickse. It's a Swiss book whose main character is the son of an Orthodox Jewish family. As such, the book incorporates a lot of Yiddish and Swiss-specific vocabulary. Despite this, I still find it a relatively easy read and I enjoy figuring out new words. American English slang includes a surprising amount of Yiddish and I love finding the words I already know from that. I'm considering adding in Jane Austen's Emma to join the forum book club this month. It is only $0.99 and I have already read it in English (albeit a long time ago).

Goal for this week:
Watch the Arte journal every day.
Read another 40 pages of Wolkenbruchs wunderliche Reise in die Arme einer Schickse.
