Stolen debit card + Britannica Premium

My kid stole my debit card and exposed that on the internet. :cry:
Then I have found in my email box subscription to the free trial of the Britannica online dictionary (starts tonight, 09.01.2018).
As soon as I noticed this, I have blocked the card and sent an email to the technical support of Britannica for the subscription cancellation (they don't have automatic cancellation).
As soon as I sent this email, they tried to take the annual sum of subscription for the service (I got an sms), of course, unsuccessfully, because the card had been already blocked. :twisted:
Super!
First of all, the subscription was activated tonight at 2 a.m. And I sent a cancellation request at 2.30. a.m.
Of course, the trial period was not ended.
Secondly, there is a note on their site that they take about 75 cents every day for their subscription, starting from the billing period.
But they have tried to take the annual sum tonight! :shock:
So, I understood that I have to block my card forever and use only my customer number (because I don't want to reissue the card).
What do you think?
Maybe it is not a real one, but a fraudster's Britannica?
I don't know about this service a lot, but I thought they had used paypal billing before.

More details needed...
Were you a customer of Britannica before? What exactly did your kid do?
Who sent you the email notification - Britannica or your bank?
To determine whether it was the real Britannica we'd need to see the url (including the email address probably, though it can be fake too). Please don't post them as active links (use the "code" tag, add _ before the url or just post a screenshot)

Thread renamed. Feel free to rename it further but make it clear that your details were stolen too.

Also this is one of the topics where you might have to use L1 to figure out what to do :(

I think you need have your debit card reissued, change of number and all. Your card number has been compromised and is online for the world to see. I'm confused as to why you wouldn't get it reissued to begin with. Yes it's a major pain, but it's a heck of a lot less expensive. By "customer number" I'm assuming you mean account number. While I'm well aware that banking is not the same everywhere, I would imagine only using your account number would mean that you'd end up paying primarily, or perhaps only, in cash in person and it would seriously limit your ability to pay for things online.

Thank you for your support, guys!
Britannica has cancelled the subscription. The specialists of my bank told me that reissuing of the card is quite an easy and cheap operation, it costs about 150 rub (about 2-3 $).
My kid apologised sincerely and gracefully, and we agreed that she would use only a paypal account and only from my permission.

That's good to know. I'm still confused why you ended up with a britannica subscription though. Could be a fraud scheme with an intention to get a refund on a different credit card... I know this is done with hotels at least.

Not good but stealing to buy dictionary access = 1000x better than to buy drink or drugs!

Teenage years (I’m guessing the age) can be difficult. There’s often a feeling amongst teens (at least mine) that they are entitled to access to the common wealth of the family - especially for something obviously good such as a dictionary. As they mature they want to feel like equal partners in the family and they want to be independent (financially and otherwise) - but lack the earning capacity of their parents. They can feel it’s unfair that the parents control the finances (and therefore their independence). Of course, another part of them realises that you shouldn’t take money without asking.

Dad’s computer is getting old and slow - he buys a new one. Mum buys an electric drill to do some repairs around the house. Kid needs a dictionary to do schoolwork to a high standard? Who is the odd one out? The kid, the one with no income (allowances and outlining what their purposes are is a whole subject of its own). All worthwhile purchases. The kid may not even see the need to ask for such an obviously worthwhile purchase. Or, may be frustrated that they don’t have access to money and think, “Damn it, I’m buying that dictionary - they surely can’t complain about a dictionary”. Kids don’t consider priorities, cash flow etc and as teens are usually constantly testing boundaries, anyway.

I don’t know if I’ve managed to articulate why but I think that this is not as bad as you might feel - especially if there is a real apology and no repeat incidences. And especially as it wasn’t for drink or drugs!

That’s a good saying - which I’d never heard before! Often it’s noones fault - just a stage that has to be negotiated - a lot like making mistakes in language learning.

I just checked Olga’s age - she must have quite a precocious (in a positive way) kid!

Olga, I feel a bit weird talking about you and your child in your thread! We have had similar (but different) things happen in my household and it was all good in the end! I’m glad the credit card thing seems to be working out.
