Hey, RDearman & Zenmonkey - you could host a meetup of your own and and give all the lectures during a weekend. ;)

Most MUD games are all text based. Just like the old "Zork" game way back in the day. You need to telnet into them. If you're using windows the telnet command is built-in although you might have to enable it. To enable on Windows 10:

Open “Control Panel“.
Open “Programs“.
Select the “Turn Windows features on or off ” option.
Check the “Telnet Client” box.
Click “OK“. A box will appear that says “Windows features” and “Searching for required files“.When complete, the Telnet client should be installed in Windows.

There is a meta-site which allows you to search for Internet Mud games called MudConnector. http://www.mudconnect.com/

Some of the ones I found after a quick search:

http://mush.nymphomatic.org (Multi-Linqual)
http://www.vanciamud.fr/ (French)
telnet://silmaril.novacomp.it:4000 (Italian)
http://www.esacor.com/ (Italian)
telnet://mclmud.mclink.it:6000 (Italian)
telnet://neon.ods.org:8010 (Italian)
telnet://gueldenland.de:4444 (German)
telnet://mg.mud.de:4711 (German)
telnet://rlmud.org:5001 (Spanish)
telnet://mud.balzhur.org:5400 (Spanish)

There are space games, fantasy (the majority) and other types of roleplay games. You just have to search for the ones you like best. Also because they are all multi-player games then there is quite a community built up around them.

Oh forgot to mention, there are also clients you can install, not just telnet.

http://tintin.sourceforge.net/
https://www.mudlet.org/

Or putty is always an option.

  • Using online MUD games to help improve output in your TL
  • Tactics to use your TL when you visit a TL country. There is a thread around somewhere where I made suggestions about ways to get practice.
  • Free or opensource software to learn a new language.
  • The way of the lazy fist, how to learn a language, eventually.
  • Time management for language learning, or Using org-mode to change your life.
  • I have no interest in speaking to people, what the hell am I learning a language for?

I really want to try to do a speech in French. But would people be able to understand me, that is the question. Oh well, perhaps it is better to give it a miss this year. Although hopefully I'll have the results of our study complete, but I'd do that one in English.

I'd listen to those!
I'd also like to hear a talk by you on your experience of learning French after Italian ...difficulties, differences, strategies, and interference.

I went back to try and find this list I'd made about possible talks. Your suggestion is actually really good. I remember how often Italian words would slip into my head and out of my mouth. In fact it still happens sometimes, just not so often. Need a good title though... something like:
I have a bucket of foreign words in my head, and I always pick the wrong one.

Thought of some others as well recently.
  • Intermediate learners, demoralisation, and demotivation.
  • When have you learned "enough" of a language?
  • It has been 3 months, why the f&*k am I not fluent?
  • How to find subject specific vocabulary.

If anyone has any other suggestions?

I don't suppose you know whether this talk was recorded? I checked the youtube channel and can't seem to find any results (at least based on your username and/or lgbt). I'd be interested in hearing more about this.

EDIT: Actually, think I've found it. I'm guessing you were talking about this one?

Don't have any extra suggestions, but points 1 and 2 catch my attention if you're feeling the room so to speak.

At least one talk that I'm aware of hasn't been uploaded (the "Multilingual Bratislava" one, which I remember because it was the one where I awkwardly tried to ask a question in German  ), but the channel also hasn't been updated in three days, so it might be that some of the talks won't be uploaded?

I think they are just slowing down a little, probably the person doing the edits has decided to take a Christmas break?
