"We won't judge your language tastes."

"Are your friends and family tired of your language obsession? We never will!"
The most serious one is the third line, as our independence from any product or company is one of our main advantages. Another thing we might want to somehow include, and I am not sure whether my ideas are getting even close to it, is the plurality of opinions and approaches here. Many forums are just regurgitating the same stuff all over again, this forum is not.

I like 1, 3 and 5 of Cavesa's post below. I don't like 4 on the grounds of it could sound very intimidating! I know fine well it is humour amongst nerds but we want to be encouraging and inclusive (which I have no doubt Cavesa agrees with - I wasn't getting on at you )

Re: We need a new forum tag line! (brainstorming)
I like these...
Carmody - "So little time; so many languages."
Smallwhite
We have members who
- grew up speaking 1 language
- grew up speaking multiple languages
- have learned 0 languages
- have learned multiple languages
- are learning 1 language
- are learning multiple languages
- go to class
- teach themselves
and I'd love to see a tag line that's relevant to everyone.
So maybe..
"So little time; so many languages. Start here!"
"Little time; many languages. Get help here!"
"Little time; many languages. Discuss!"
"Independent language learning hints, resources, discussions"
"How to learn a language" (probably top search term! But far too close to somewhere else?)
"languages - how to learn"
By the way "A language learners’ forum" to "The independent language learners’ forum" ??

Too close to the old forum (which was named after a book by Barry Farber). Also, people are more likely to google a specific language, like "how to learn spanish".Whodathunkitz wrote:"How to learn a language" (probably top search term! But far too close to somewhere else?)

Re: We need a new forum tag line! (brainstorming)
I absolutely agree the joke about the 7th language could be intimidating or not understood. We certainly don't want to look like the people trying to hack Chinese in a week and so on. But I'm afraid the "So little time, so many languages" and its variations carry the same problem. We want to attract people learning their first foreign language too, smallwhite is absolutely right, it is hard to create a tag that won't turn away either the beginners nor the very experienced language enthusiasts.
This is the one I find the closest to the goal. After all, the independence both of this forum from products, and of the individual learners, that is one of the most general characteristics of this community. While some of this forum's members like classes, or teachers, and anything, we are a forum of people, who understand that the responsibility is ours, that human tools are still our tools, that may be able to teach us something but they cannot learn anything for us. This freedom of thought here and plurality is our main asset. The level of mutual respect among individual members is insanely high, compared to most internet communities. One of the reasons is the respect we have for different opinions, and our struggle to keep even rather heated discussions centered on the issue, on individual arguments, not on personality or ideology.

Of mine, "Independent language learning hints, resources, discussions" is my favourite, but reineke's is punchy.
Another, "while we're at it" comment, could someone shrink the banner image & title, it uses a lot of screenspace and makes it harder to hide at work (I multi-task while I'm waiting for slow IM typers, honest)!
If there's a non-image version (mobile, screenreader) - I'd like to know.
