Bad day at the office...

But why would anybody call a volcanic rift in Siberia "traps"'? Again we get the solution from Wikipedia - it claims that the English word was nicked from Swedish, where stairs as are called "trappor" (although Wikipedia quotes the singular "trappa"). Well, us Danes have the same word ("trapper") for vertical location changing devices in or outside houses, so I would like to see which Swedish geologists introduced the term which later was accepted in English and Russian.

The term "traps" is derived from the Swedish word for stairs (trappa, or sometimes trapp), referring to the step-like hills forming the landscape of the region, which is typical of flood basalts.

The Sibirian traps are actually not the only ones. The limit between Trias and the Jurassic was also marked by traps, this time the Deccan traps, which covered large portions of Southern India. Luckily we haven't seen anything remotely like these two megadisasters in our time - the nearest thing would be the Laki volcanic event on Iceland that killed a third of the population between 1873 and 1784. And well, us - we are collectively a mega disaster. The extinction rates today are at a level that clearly qualify as a major extinction event.

I haven't updated this thread since March 20 2017, but I have an excellent reason - I have been visiting Romania and spent the time speaking, listening to and reading Romanian - and I do think my Romanian is slightly less abysmal now than it was a week ago. I think that the trip might justify a few remarks in this thread, some pertaining to the travel itself and some to the books I bought down there. But let's start with the beginning. A company named WizzAir has started up offering cheap flights from Billund (near my hometown) to Cluj-Napoca in Romania, and I decided to do a monolingual trip down there to revitalize my dwindling command of Romanian while the route is still open.

Cluj are aproximativ 340.000 de locuitori și are o clară atingere metropolitană.

Re: Iversen's second multiconfused log thread

Postby Iversen » Fri Mar 31, 2017 11:51 am

OK, time to write about "Muzicofilia" by Oliver Sacks. By a strange coincidence I have written about another book by this British psychiatrist and author, "The Man Who Mistook his Wife for a Hat" in this very thread not long ago, so when I saw about music written by him I grabbed it - and it didn't even ruin me, since the price was a mere 59 RON (59 lei, approx. 13 € or 15 $). The only catch was that it was a Romanian translation, but that suits my language ressuscitation program like a glove, and I found that it only contained a few incomprehensible words per page - unlike to the travelogue anthology I described earlier, where I felt I had to thrash through some seriously dense lexicological underwood. Luckily I had clear evidence that it only was the Romanian writers who displayed a tendency to ostentate the extent of their native huge vocabularies and not me who had an unduly restricted one. The proof was that most of the words I looked up in my newly aquired micro dictionary weren't found there - and given that the Romanian part is supposed to contain some 17.500 words and expressions (mostly words) I'm in good company. I have long been thinking that there must be some kind of statistical model that permits you to estimate the size of your own vocabulary based on the number of words you fail to find in dictionary with a certain number of words - but I'm currently not capable of doing the math.

OK, back to Sacks. The book is basically a description with lots of case stories of just about anything that makes the musical univers of humans diverge from the standard, in particular the kind of cases where a connection to brain lesions could be established. So it is not an analysis of the notion of musicality in general you find here, but with such a plethory of descriptions of positive and negative aberrations from the normal humdrum you do nevertheless get some sense of how the musicality mechanism functions even in healthy 'normal' humans.

SCO: And o coorse you isnae gotta get the tale in English (awbeit that leid wad be halely permissible here, gien that Sacks wrate his beuk in English) so ... let's see, whit should ah choose.. let's do the stairt in Esperanto!

Re: Iversen's second multiconfused log thread

I have been busy revising old music so that I with a clear conscience can can opload the scores to IMSLP (alias Petrucci), whre it is safe to assume that absolutely nothing will happen and nobody will ever play or read or even notice them among almost 400.000 other scores - except myself. The trouble is that this activity takes time, which has to be taken from other activities such as eating, sleeping and studying languages. OK, I have watched a few TV programs - like the German quiz "Wer weiß denn so was" today and "Viaggio al Passagio Nord-Ovest" on RaiUno yesterday - one of very few programs on that channel which actually are worth watching. Besides I have been looking at a number of programs with no music, including some that weren't exactly within my fields of interest - like golf matches and political discussions - and others which I do like, but already have seen - like the IQ quiz on BBC.

Why?

Well, I had from the outset promised myself not to start revising old junk, but then I ran into a coincidence between a good idea concerning my cello concerto and an intensely boring, but music free snooker tournament in China, and I succombed to the temptation. Actually this happened before my trip to Romania, but I only had time to finish the revision after my return home, and like an irresponsible binge drinker I then proceeded to revise a number of other, smaller items. I'm slightly perplexed by the fact that I don't seem to have lost my ability to write music after more than twenty years, but at least I have not yet taken the final jump into the bottomloss tar pit called composition of new music - I have just been revising old works. Although in some cases the result did seem like a new work, just based on regurgitated old themes - like when I was writing a prettier copy of the final movement of a sonata for viola and piano and realized that the music also would sound nice when played backwards, as evidenced below. And of course I couldn't resist the temptation so I inserted some twenty sdrawkcab measures - or cancricans as the procedure was called in the good old days of J.S.Bach & co.:

Opus11.jpg

And the good idea concerning the cello concerto? Well, kick out half the woodwind, all brass except a horn and a trumpet and all percussion except one bass drum. It is a cello concerto, for heavens sake. How can you hear the soloist with all those instruments jamming around him or her at the same time?

I have done absolute nothing to learn languages the last couple of days, except reading a few pages in Latin. But now the aforementioned symphony has been not revised but totally rewritten (and cut down to around 13 minutes in the process), and in this version stipulated for a small orchestra of 14 winds, 3 drummers and kitchen pot bangers and an unspecified number of string players of the usual 5 denominations. Now I just have to scan the lot and maybe write a piano version .. later. Writing parts would be a waste of time since nobody will ever play the thing once I have uploaded it.

Has the Croation pronunciation got an extra syllable in comparison with the Serbian one?

The older form (older... like 1300 years ago) was indeed *melko or something like it, and then that *el changed in various ways (e.g. in East Slavic it changed to -olo- so we have moloko in Russian).

It's a bit more complicated than in looks. There are basically at least five pronunciations:

• mleko, in Serbia (but also in parts of Croatia) - this is standard in Serbian
• mlijeko (two syllables) in Bosnia-Herzegovina, Montenegro, parts of Croatia - this is also standard in one variant of Serbian
• mliko in parts of Croatia and Bosnia-Herzegovina - non-standard but quite common in e.g. Split
• mljeko (however it's spelled mlijeko) - in most of Croatia, e.g. in Zagreb today
• mljeko (one syllable, l and j are separate sounds, however it's spelled mlijeko) - standard in Croatian

A couple of corrections:

(I assume you meant "odd"; we use чудан, непаран is only for numbers 1,3,5...) балканским ритмовима, које није нарочито лако играти, али ако први пут чуо ритам (this should be rephrased, but I'm not sure what do you want exactly to express), није тешко играти музику.

Check Easy Croatian (very useful for Bosnian, Montenegrin and Serbian as well)
