Outage on Site 06/07 December

Postby rdearman » Wed Dec 07, 2016 4:06 pm

Hello All,

First let me apologise for the outage we've had over the last 24 hours. There was a problem with the server, which affected every site on the entire machine. The hosting provider was already working on it by the time I notified them, having been informed by other clients. They had to do a full server restoration of over 638 Gigabytes and then repair various issues related to the SQL DB.

It is the first time we've had a major outage for an extended period of time, and as a moderation/administration team we'll go off and look at alternatives. Again I apologise for the outage, and the length of time it took to restore the service.

Regards,
rdearman.

EDIT: The super challange bot website was also down, however because the tweets were held on the twitter server awaiting processing you shouldn't see any problems with your tweeted updates to the bots, other than they will not have processed until today.

Yes, thanks for all the work you have done!

On a positive note: when the site was down I actually had to find material in my L2 to read. Sometimes I spent too much time here learning how to learn a language, and not enough time actually learning a language.

A constructive use of time! I commend you. I at least managed to listen to some French news while waiting for the technical guy to explain to me what a 1045 error was and why it would take awhile to fix! :D

As Iverson mentioned on HTLAL, I think the absence of this forum alerts us as to how important this forum is, and how we need to set up a funding system to keep this alive for the long term.

Thank-you for fixing the site and for being so gracious about a problem that was not under your control.

If you're considering changing hosts, the (UK) Internet Service Providers Association awards might offer some contenders for consideration.

2016 shared hosting winner: Heart Internet (home pro?)
2014 Shared hosting winner: MacAce (cPack?)
2013 SME business host winner: Storm Internet
2012 SME business host winner: Netcetera

I join in thanking rdearman for reacting rapidly for solving the problem. It is great to have a reactive admin who communicates with the members.

The fact that I did not even think of going to HTLAL to see if this outage was mentioned there, but posted in the Facebook group instead, just shows how this forum has totally replaced HTLAL, at least for me.
