Search Posts by Language

Postby alexkelbo » Thu Sep 01, 2016 8:07 am

Sometimes I wish I could search this forum for all threads that talk about a specific language. (Not threads that are written that language.) The way I imaginge doing this is by users tagging their post with a language hashtag (#spanish), so that later I can search for #spanish. Think Twitter. I don't know if it's possible to implement such a system using this forum software, and of course, it relies on users diligently putting hashtags to all their posts. Well, it's just an idea.

This forum is indexed by word. So you can just search for the name of the language.

The disadvantage is that it catches everything. So now this thread will show up whenever someone search for Spanish since both I and alexraasch wrote the word despite this thread having nothing to do with the language. There are major advantages and requests for tags (especially for logs) but I have no idea how difficult it would be to implement.

There was a phpBB extension being written but it was abandoned by the original author if someone wants to pick it up?

Two things I would like to do is implement something that allows a tag search that would address this and an analytics "number of hrs with language x studied" bot for the language logs.

For the first, relevant to this thread, I can look into an extension that would address this:
https://www.phpbb.com/customise/db/exte ... opic_tags/

If I do, are we still implementing fixes/updates?

We are still loading extensions if that is what you mean?

Yes, if I do the validation and then add it to the github and create a request then the magic will occur and voila, site updated. If I can remember all of that...

I'm all for tags: that's how I search for things on the HTLAL site.
