Social tracking

Postby Serpent » Fri Sep 30, 2016 8:15 pm

Many people love using the SC bot simply to keep track of their reading/watching. There are some dedicated sites for keeping track of cultural stuff and travel. They're aimed at native speakers but do their job for tracking the learning too.
The "social" part implies being able to rate things and read/write reviews. Most of these sites allow keeping a private profile.
Do you use any of these sites? Feel free to post the link to your profile or just share some tips :)
Which other sites do you know, especially used by non-English speakers?

Books/media
Books

https://www.goodreads.com
https://www.librarything.com free accounts are limited to 200 books. Interface available in various languages
http://www.anobii.com/ similar to the above but more popular among Italians (thanks, garyb). Interfaces in many languages

TV/movies
https://trakt.tv series and movies
https://letterboxd.com/ movies (thanks, garyb)
https://myanimelist.net anime (thanks, vonPeterhof)
https://www.betaseries.com a French site (thanks, Elenia)

Music
http://www.last.fm web, ios, android

Other/misc
https://www.class-central.com/ a MOOC aggregator where you can find and review courses
https://untappd.com/ - keep track of the beers you've tried and find out what is popular in various areas

Travel
Maps

https://www.tripadvisor.com/TravelMapHome tracks individual cities/towns and allows you to add the ones you'd like to visit. many languages available
https://traveltip.org/countries_visited.php
http://www.wolpy.com
http://tripster.ru/questions/ a Russian travel for tracking the cities visited and planning trips/sharing advice
http://travelscore.org has a map divided into small squares (2x2 degrees). You mark which squares you've been to, and which countries (if more than one has some territory inside a square). It then counts your score, which consists of the number of countries visited, the percentage of the Earth surface visited, and the percentage of the world population living there. No storage/history. I also found it convenient for displaying which places I've passed by bus/train or seen from a plane.
https://www.mapquest.com allows you to create as many maps as you want
http://nomadmania.com/ challenges you to diversify your travel further by visiting each region of a country. also has lists of UNESCO sites, UNESCO candidates, other famous sights, islands, museums, castles etc.
http://mosttraveledpeople.com similar to the above but more concise. It has a more elitist feel with its lists of Michelin restaurants, golf courses and dive sites. It also divides the world into fewer regions, so that for example Montenegro, Belarus, Finland and even Poland count as one unit each.
From what I understand, these two sites aim to be equivalents of the Guinness Book for travellers (the official one no longer accepts travel-related claims).
https://3pulse.com/ allows you to track cities/towns and other kinds of locations (lakes, mountains etc; also some sights). It also rates how extensively you've travelled through a specific country

http://www.atlasobscura.com/ focuses on more obscure places, the kind that the locals know about but tourists often overlook.
Recently added: Gastro Obscura, for weird/peculiar/culturally important foods.

A great list of apps
Bonus: for the crafty folks, ideas for tracking your travel physically :)

Aviation
http://flightdiary.net
http://openflights.org open source, available in various languages including Finnish. some nice stats
http://www.flightmemory.com / https://www.flugstatistik.de available in English and German. Note that city/country names are stored as text, so Germany and Deutschland will count as two different countries.
http://www.jetitup.com more stats than on other sites, including their own flights database (since about 2005)
http://www.airfleets.net/home/ for keeping track of specific aircrafts you've flown on (registration code obligatory), available in English/Spanish/French. Useful for browsing each airline's fleet.
http://www.airlinemeals.net/ Upload photos of plane meals and find out what to expect on your upcoming flight and which food vocab you need to learn :D

Only Goodreads. There is also betaserie, which is a French tv tracking site. I have something with them, but I'm no longer sure what, or what they do. I get emails from them more often than I would like (weekly).

I like the library thing much more than the goodreads. But I use goodreads now, as there are more reader, especially from this forum.

Our progress bars are a kind of social tracking and I am grateful for them.

Thanks for more tips, Serpent!

I like Goodreads but have only used it to find recommendations for books that I might like.

I also use Goodreads a lot. I like the ability to set a goal of how many books I'm going to read each year and track how I'm doing against it. I particularly like using the app on my phone to scan the bar code of the book I'm reading. For reasons I don't understand, I can't always find the correct versions of Croatian books if I type the name into the search function, yet if I scan the bar code they often appear.

I tried to use last.fm for a while because I thought that was a really cool idea too. It helped me discover new Croatian music I liked by suggesting things based on my listening habits. But I've had to give up on it because the technology just doesn't work properly. There was some sort of iTunes update which meant my iPod wouldn't scrobble at all for ages and now it does scrobble, but it scrobbles really random tracks that I know I haven't listened to. And that makes it all a bit pointless :(

I love the idea of tracking travel too and I wasted a not insignificant amount of time yesterday tagging places I'd been on the Tripadvisor map  :D

I used HabitRPG, or perhaps it is named Habitica now or something like that. You have a character, evolve it based on exp you get for tasks, daily stuff, and so on, you can make teams and use the social aspect of it all. I left as my character was dying too often of forgotten daily tasks. :-D

I used to use Habitica too. I should go back to it. I never tried the team thing though. Maybe we should try that.
