New Spanish Profile Page on Static Site by getreallanguage

Postby rdearman » Fri Feb 26, 2016 3:52 pm

Hello everyone! getreallanguage has written a brilliant language profile for Spanish which I've uploaded on the static site. I've also updated the menu system so that it is easier to find all our guest posts and interesting static content! Please have a look at the amazing work that getreallanguage has done. It is greatly appreciated.

Don't forget if you'd like to create a Profile page for a language your studying that I am looking for volunteers and more static content. You wouldn't go far wrong if you used getreallanguage's Spanish profile page as a template.

Once again a big thank you to getreallanguage for the hard work!

Great article, a really good profile. Allow me to point out one small mistake though: In the part about grammatical gender, mano is given as an example of nouns in masculine ending in -o. However, mano is actually an exceptiion to the rule, it is una mano, thus feminine.

I look forward to reading the profile on varieties which is announced in the text.

It's a good profile. I hope we can get more. I think the way it's styled isn't quite right though. The old HTLAL profiles feel more accessible to me. This one comes across as a long article with lots of sections you have to read through, whereas the old ones felt like compendiums of information with different sections you could flick through to.
Some factors I can think of that cause this:
-Lack of an index with quick links to the sections
-Not as much of a visual boundary between different sections
-No colours

But I'm not a designer and have no real idea how to make it nicer.

Good point, I think that is the fault of the editor (me) rather than the author. I'll see if I can work out how to put an index and some in page jump links in.

A little problem here:
"As an example, most nouns ending in -o are masculine (mano) and most nouns ending in -a are feminine (mesa), but there are exceptions (día, sistema are masculine, foto is feminine on account of being a short form of fotografía)"

'Mano' is feminine, so it should definitely be grouped with the exceptions rather than used as an example of the general rule.

A brilliant profile, indeed. It also gives some pointers on how I could modify the existing profiles on old HTLAL for this forum just to keep things consistent.

On the other hand, it'd be a tough act even for me to follow since the new Spanish profile was drawn up by a native speaker and backed up by a input from the fairly large bodies of Hispanophones and Spanish learners here. Somehow I don't see how new profiles of Hungarian or Slovak, as examples, could be quite as comprehensive.

I'm looking into it.

Great profile, although I found it a little on the technical side. I've been studying languages for years and I've read a few books on linguistics so I could follow it fine, but for a newbie who's trying to decide between languages, some parts might be hard to understand. In comparison I find the HTLAL profile more readable and approachable, even if less informative. But I'm not sure what the right balance is and I might be making wrong assumptions about the target audience.

Thanks for the good feedback. I can't believe I made such a silly mistake with mano. I'll go ahead and correct it and work through the back end to get it updated. I do agree that a clickable index of sections would help navigate it.

That's fantastic!

Although I know I couldn't muster as much of the grammatical detail (at least reliably), I might be able to write a similar profile for Icelandic if that would be at all useful/desirable.
