Re: 3 Day Projects (3DP)
Very sorry to hear the bad news.Teango » Wed Sep 14, 2022 9:53 pm
Reawakened my hiragana and completed Lesson 1 of Genki I textbook and workbook.
Apologies, everyone. As you may have noticed, I haven't posted a new project for the past 8 months. This is due to a long relapse of a serious chronic auto-immune illness. And just as I finally started to feel better and come off biologics, I was hit with COVID, despite being fully vaccinated and double-boosted. I've consequently been on lockdown with heavy symptoms for a further month and my most recent home test is still somehow positive. It's been a real rough ride for the whole family.
When not coughing up a fevered lung, I've spent the last few days studying Japanese from bed for a beginner's class at university. I haven't been able to physically attend any classes yet but have kept up with all the classwork and assignments. Blowing the dust off my Totoro pencil case, with sharpened pencil and eraser in hand, I've been tasked with writing out each kana umpteen times - I feel like I'm back in school and paying undue penance at the blackboard once again.
You are in our thoughts and
Best Wishes for a speedy recovery.
Please do keep us advised.

58. チョコレートケーキ (chocolate cake, ja)
Japanese #3 (15h)
Got my katakana down and completed Lesson 2 of Genki I textbook and workbook.
I'm feeling much better this week. I attended my first Japanese class here on Thursday, and managed to put some of what I learned into action after karate this weekend, treating the family to cakes, sashimi, and smoothies from local Japanese bakeries and shops. The teaching methodology and materials are traditional, the teacher seems nice, and the classrooms are clean, stylish, and brand new. There are even massage chairs in the common area! Overall, I'm enjoying my new-found freedom, and am eager to jump into kanji from Lesson 3 onwards.

59. Testing, testing...1-2-3 (ja)
Japanese #4 (13h)
Reviewed all the kana and Lessons 1 and 2 of Genki I in preparation for exams.
Tuesday was my second Japanese class, and it was very testing...literally. I arrived an hour early to take the tests and quizzes I missed while indisposed due to illness earlier this month, and sat a further quiz for everyone at the end of the class! At this point, I've already made headway into Lesson 3 of Genki, and have started including basic kanji in my writing.

Motivating moments: Japanese
While at a hip-hop dance class for my daughter, I got speaking to one of the Japanese moms. She was very impressed with my feeble attempt at Japanese conversation and asked if Iʻd been learning Japanese for 3 years. I told her I had been studying for about 2 weeks and had learned a little Japanese in Tokyo back in 2005. She seemed super nice, and considering my poor beginner Japanese, overly generous and kind with her praise. However I'm worried now I may have got her English-speaking husband into trouble. Sorry dude, I owe you a beer!

60. Players on the pitch... (ja)
Japanese #5 (13h)
Lesson 3 of Genki I textbook and workbook - done!
Not to fall foul of pitch accent early on in the game, I listen to the accompanying audio files and try to pencil in pitch contours around the kana (such a shame this isn't already marked in the textbook!) When it comes to long vocabulary lists, however, I'm never too sure if the narrator adds their own artificial intonation. Recommendations for an easy-to-use iPhone app that displays pitch accent for Japanese, anyone?

Re: 3 Day Projects (3DP)
Not sure if you know about this already, but there are two pdf files that show pitch accent for the dialogues in Genki. They can be found here: https://community.wanikani.com/t/pitch- ... rner/18746
Scroll down until you see "Genki Pitch accent supplement" and there will be two pdfs to download.
I believe that these pdfs were created from an earlier edition of the textbook, but in my browsing of both the textbooks and pdfs, it seems not much (if anything) has changed.
Unfortunately, this does not cover the vocabulary, but it's hopefully helpful none-the-less.

Re: 3 Day Projects (3DP)
I hope you're feeling better and better. It's good to see you posting regularly again!
And I really love your 3DP idea, I would like to try it out too. But nope, not following you into the Japanese adventure
P.S. loved the story of you meeting that Japanese speaking mom. her husband deserves the trouble for not speking any Japanese Perhaps he owes you a beer, for creating some useful motivation moment.

Re: 3 Day Projects (3DP)
I really like the idea of 3 day projects, because you're right, it's so hard to stick to an intensive plan over long stretches of time. I'll have to brainstorm ways to try it in my learning!
