I decided on Assimil, and did the first two chapters. They seemed quite easy so I think I will try to do 2 chapters alongside LR every day, and slow down to 1 chapter a day when it gets harder.

That's an excellent idea. The assimil course for French is perfect! That's how I started French too. :)

I don't know if you've ever seen the French course "French in Action" that was created for American University courses but you may find it useful. The main part is the videos that are online for free but there's also textbooks, workbooks and audio that you can purchase for it as well on eBay for pretty cheap.

Here's the link to watch the videos if you're interested: https://www.learner.org/resources/series83.html

I also did two more Assimil lessons.

Thank you! Good to know that I'm on the right track, I found the beginning of your log where you describe how you learnt french very useful!

Today, I did 1 hour LR and 3 Assimil lessons (one was the review)

I read this old post by ProfArguelles: http://how-to-learn-any-language.com/fo ... PN=0&TPN=1

And tried out what I could understand of his method. I used audacity to remove the gaps from the audio. Then I shadowed the lesson. At first, I could barely say any of it, just sort of mumbling the sound, stumbling over my words and getting lost, but after around 15-20 minutes, maybe more, I could shadow the sounds pretty well and understand almost all of it. I then shadowed while reading English a few times, then shadowed while reading the French. It felt... different, like I was understanding a lot deeper and I could say the entire thing quicker and more fluidly. I think that I'll continue with this method, it's hard but almost definitely more useful.

: 9 / 37 Le Trône de fer - L’Intégrale 1 (9:00/37:00)
: 7 / 113 Assimil - French with ease (7/113)

How's your French going. It's been two years now

Two scenarios are possible:

1) L-R-ing novels + Assimil was such a success OP just carried on with life in French.
2) L-R-ing novels + Assimil was such a dismal failure OP was demoralised.

I really wish I knew the outcome.
