WEDNESDAY, 20 JANUARY 2021
Today, a simple day – did some Cortina, reviewing Lesson 1 sentences and applying the scriptorium technique. Finished up with a couple of DL exercises. (≈30 min)

THURSDAY, 21 JANUARY 2021
Finished Disc 6 of PN (review). So far it’s going pretty smoothly, I remember a lot, almost everything. That being said, I feel that I am much better at comprehension (while also responding to very specific patterns). I wouldn’t be able to use much of it during a real conversation. However, that’s not exactly a problem right now. I’m the type of a learner who prefers to build a foundation before taking the "output" leap – especially speaking freely. My goal is to begin working with an online tutor once I finish a couple of elementary self-study courses. (≈60 min)

FRIDAY, 22 JANUARY 2021
Continuing the review with Disc 7 of PN (up to 7.6) followed by a few reps of DL. Then, in the evening, also got into Assimil, covering the introduction and Lesson 1. Ah, Assimil, it feels nice and familiar, like meeting an old friend. I think I will enjoy using it much more than some of the other resources I’ve been experimenting with. (≈80 min)

SATURDAY, 23 JANUARY 2021
Today, working on Assimil, doing some scriptorium and speaking exercises with Lesson 2. In addition, finished Disc 7 of PN, and some DL as usual. Finally, I started watching a series in Italian on Netflix, but at this early stage I consider this to be passive practice (at best) rather than active study time, and consequently do not count it towards my total time. All in all, a good day. (≈60 min)

SUNDAY, 24 JANUARY 2021
An Assimil kind of day. Completed Lesson 3, and then reviewed the previous two + read over the introductory notes. I really like Assimil. I did some scriptorium, pronunciation exercises, and finally added a few sentences to SRS from Lesson 1. (≈75 min)

– Sei a Milano?
– No, non sono a Milano, sono a Roma.

– Are (you) in Milan?
– No, (I) am not in Milan, (I) am in Rome.

– Sei di Roma?
– No, non sono di Roma. Sono di Londra.

– Are (you) from Rome?
– No, (I) am not from Rome. (I) am from London.

Carlo è di Padova; io, invece, sono di Londra.
Carlo is from Padua; I, however, am from London.

Davide non è a casa.
Davide is not (at) home.

Any and all corrections welcome!

MONDAY, 25 JANUARY 2021
Intense day today, but not language learning wise. The heavy snowfall, while a sight to behold, caused an overwhelming number of power outages across my region. Allegedly, the unusually sticky snow, piling heavily on poorly maintained wires and distribution transformers, caused many of them to fail. End result: a day with (mostly) no light, no hot water, no heat… etc. Not the best combination for January weather.

But I digress, in the end I did manage to sneak in some language learning from my (thankfully) charged iPod, phone and laptop. I covered Assimil Lesson 4. Finally, did some DL reps. (≈30 min)

TUESDAY, 26 JANUARY 2021
Another day of limited access to modern tools – wow, how quickly we miss what we usually take for granted. Power has been going on and off all day. On the desk, Assimil Lesson 5 - pronunciation, scriptorium, exercises, and a few new Anki cards. Also, DL, which is growing on me… but still seems likeable only in small doses, a few minutes here and there. (≈60 min)

WEDNESDAY, 27 JANUARY 2021
Not much news to report PN Disc 8 review and DL. (≈40 min)

THURSDAY, 28 JANUARY 2021
Finished reviewing PN Disc 8. DL as usual. (≈60 min)

FRIDAY, 29 JANUARY 2021
Not a lot today, but did manage to fulfill my “365” obligations. Completed Lesson 6 of Assimil along with some scriptorium and pronunciation practice. Finished up with DL, which is growing on me despite its obvious flaws. (≈30 min)

SATURDAY, 30 JANUARY 2021
First revision lesson, Lesson 7, of Assimil Italian with Ease. Also took a few minutes to listen over a few dialogues from the previous lessons. Wrapped up with DL. (≈30 min)

SUNDAY, 31 JANUARY 2021
Today I reviewed PN Disc 9 (Tracks 1-9) and did a little bit of DL on the side. This wraps up the first month of the 365 challenge – the first half-month, in my case – and so far no missing days, which makes me pretty happy. While it’s no secret that Paul Noble, Assimil, and Duolingo are not the most hardcore ways to approach language learning, it is keeping me on track, and that’s the priority right now. (≈60 min)

January has also been good for some other [not language learning related] goals. I met the target of reading over one thousand pages/month. My only rule is: books read for work/research don’t count. I also went on walks (sometimes hikes) and meditated consistently. Small wins, but important.

MONDAY, 1 FEBRUARY 2021
Finished Paul Noble Italian, Disc 9. This means I am no longer in review mode, and finally covering some new material. Also, Duolingo, where I did a bunch of lessons and completed my first “story” (kind of meh). (≈50 min)

TUESDAY, 2 FEBRUARY 2021
Today: a simple review day. Going over the pesky differences in verbs such as arrivare (m/f sing/plural) using PN. Also SRS and DL. (≈35 min)

WEDNESDAY, 3 FEBRUARY 2021
Another simple day - doing the bare minimum for the 365 challenge, which is not enough for me, but still better than nothing I suppose. PN and DL (≈35 min)

THURSDAY, 4 FEBRUARY 2021
Much more productive today. Took a deep dive with Lesson 8 of Assimil, then did some DL and SRS with breaks in between. When I started to feel resistance, I went for a quick 20 minute walk – what a difference it made! Also, passively listening to Italian radio whenever I can, but given my level I am not counting that towards proper study time. (≈85 min)

Come (with me) into (the) kitchen, I will make you a coffee.

– Yes, it’s not bad, it’s quite comfortable.

FRIDAY, 5 FEBRUARY 2021
Another quick day. DL and SRS for the most part. Quick review of Assimil Lesson 6 before bed. That’s it. (≈35 min)

SATURDAY, 6 FEBRUARY 2021
Used Assimil Lesson 9 to practice today → listening, reading, pronunciation, scriptorium, and a few SRS flashcards. Plus the usual DL and SRS reviews. Getting into the swing of things, hope to keep the momentum going into next week! (≈75 min)
