I also preferred Parli Occitan to the Assimil course (it lost me with some random dialogue about a regional type of roof or some other such nonsense)
Was that the old Occitan assimil or the new one?

Probably the old one (lesson 10). The old Assimil occitan is, in my humble opinion, a really strange course. It's the perfect example of everything that was/is wrong with the occitanist movement. It disregards the people who were actually speaking the language at the time (seen as too rural and not militant enough), while the content is limited to: 1) heavy emphasis on the mythical Shambala that Occitania allegedly was during the Middle-Ages-before-the-French-invaded (the troubadours were great, Occitan was the language of culture in Europe, everybody in Occitania was polite and refined, Sharing/Paratge and similar virtues were practiced by all, etc.), 2) description of cities and material items. There is little in terms of everyday life situations and the likes.Jameslingua wrote:I also preferred Parli Occitan to the Assimil course (it lost me with some random dialogue about a regional type of roof or some other such nonsense)

I find I'm most interested in Provençal, but the resources for learners simply don't seem to be as robust, whether coming from English or French. I would like the support of a fairly complete course, such as Assimil or its equivalent, and not just a phrase book with common tourist terms and IPA glosses. People seem to rate the content of Provençal pour les nuls highly, but the lack of audio accompaniment is a no-go for me. In fact, it's really the audio I want to focus on, since Provençal looks pretty intelligible when one can already read Latin and French and Spanish.
