Dear fellow Forum-Users,
I would like to inform you about a tool I recently programmed (in PHP*) to create interlinear texts, which can then be used in language learning e.g. with the Birkenbihl-Method - (here you can find more information on the Birkenbihl-method: http://www.vidactic.com/?page_id=868)
* thus it needs to run on a web-server or on a local server
The software was intended to create interlinear texts, that can then be printed out and sold in paper-form to people.
I just created a github repository with the software. (You can access the repository here: https://github.com/p-freeman/Interlinear-Text-Creator)
However, as I don't have access to a computer as of now, I didn't yet completely upload the whole contents of the folder "phpqrcode" (the folder "cache" is still missing). If someone could download the software "phpqrcode" to his computer (from here: http://phpqrcode.sourceforge.net/) and then add the missing files to the repository, that would be great. Otherwise, please just be patient until I can get access to a computer to add the missing files myself.
Then, once the repository is ready, the software can be downloaded and installed on a webserver or operated locally e.g. on Android with the app "AWebServer" (which also has a php web-server included).
Then you can add your own texts and with the software create your own interlinear texts. Afterwards you can open the created html-page with Chrome (e.g. on Android) and click on share and then print and then you can print it as pdf. Then you can print out this pdf and offer it on sale to other people.
An explanation of how to exactly use the tool (especially the input syntax that the software uses) will hopefully soon appear in the repository.
Greetings and have a nice evening,
Peter

Re: New Interlinear Text Creation-Software (Free)
This looks great. If I wanted to, for instance, create an interlinear version of Alice in Wonderland in English and Spanish, I would have to upload two versions: one in English and one in Spanish? It does not actually do translation? Or does it do translation? From the screenshots in the repository, I'm not clear on how it handles texts.

Re: New Interlinear Text Creation-Software (Free)
Dear annelions,
Sorry that I didn't provide usage instructions already earlier on.
I now updated the README.md-file in the github-repository of the application (see here: https://github.com/p-freeman/Interlinear-Text-Creator) and added usage instructions on how to use the software, which should enable you to create an interlinear text with the help of the software.
However, I would like to advise you to not use Alice in Wonderland to study a language, because of the dark message of Alice in Wonderland.
Can you please read through the README-file and then get back to me and tell me if there is still something unclear about how to use the software to create an interlinear text?
You may also open new issues in the repository if you have questions on the software or ideas for how to improve the application or for bug-reports.
Thank you very much in advance for your feedback.
Looking forward to your reply and God bless you,
Peter

Re: New Interlinear Text Creation-Software (Free)
Now I have to ask: What is the "dark message" of Alice in Wonderland that makes it inappropriate for us to read?
The GitHub page sounds like the texts basically need to be segmented manually, then split into lines, then run through a machine translation system. The manual segmentation and tagging seems like a lot of work, and that's the part I would have hoped would be automated; the effort required might be prohibitive for anything longer than a song, which seems to be the use case you envision, in view of the "song name" and "music video" fields in the form.
If you do want to use this for texts in general, you might consider allowing the upload of epubs, which should contain HTML or XHTML chapters with paragraph tags. Aligning those paragraphs automatically might not be foolproof, but at least some parsing would help if anyone wanted to use this for longer texts.

Re: New Interlinear Text Creation-Software (Free)
There is a grey area with respect to "interlinear" text. I think different people define it differently. There is "parallel" text which can be (for example) two columns aligned in columns in a document or in a spreadsheet. There is a format where a common-use translation is provided for every line or sentence. And there is a format where a literal, almost word-for-word translation, is provided in a line-for-line (or sentence-by-sentence) format. There are advantages of all three formats. For the last two formats, I think the most useful is to have the L1 sentence followed by the common-use translation, followed by the literal word-by-word translation. In other words, a three-line format. I think the three-line format is the best. But it is also the most difficult to build. I think if some of the major language learning products and companies would produce a lot of material in this format, together with the audio, a lot of language learners would beat a path to their doors. All that being said, it seems to me that the application described in this thread is a two-line format with L1 plus the common-use translation.

I am curious as well. I've read it in English and it's absolutely weird but I wouldn't say that it's dark.

Re: New Interlinear Text Creation-Software (Free)
Announcing the Release of version 2* of the Interlinear-Text-Creator
I am now releasing version 2 of my Software called "Interlinear-Text-Creator". Additionally I also created a video explaining how the software can be used:
Video-Title:
How to create Interlinear Texts for Language Learning with the "Interlinear-Text-Creator"-Software
You can watch the video on Youtube:
https://youtu.be/DbyOc4FnrRQ
Download the (free) (PHP-) Software:
https://gofile.io/d/ax9Gpw
Greetings and may God bless everyone on here,
Peter Freeman
*Basically with version 2, you can now see an overview of all the existing projects, you can delete existing projects and you can also edit existing projects. The edit-function is useful for when you obtained the first translation with the help of Google-Translate or the deepl.com-translator and need to correct some words that have been mistranslated by the machine-translation software.
Comment on the field called "Source-Text (original)"
Please note, that the text needs to follow a specific syntax, so that the application can later on create the interlinear text.
So far the available formatting options that the application supports are:
- h1 (header 1)
- h2 (header 2)
- h3 (header 3)
- p (paragraph)
- br (linebreak)
- brbr (double-linebreak)
Note that:
- the code-words which determine the format of a paragraph need to be in the first line of a new segment and need to be placed within two equal-signs, e.g. =h1=, =h2=, =h3=, =p=, =br=, =brbr=
- segments are separated by a separate line with three dashes ("---")
An Example-Text for this field could be:

Re: New Interlinear Text Creation-Software (Free)
This is quickly done.
1. get two srt-files from a YouTube etc video
https://downsub.com/
2. join them horizontally
http://bonigarcia.github.io/dualsub/
3. convert the new file into text and colour, underline things etc to your liking

Re: New Interlinear Text Creation-Software (Free)
This is from a 1910 Toussaint-Langenscheidt course that was sent in instalments to self-learning subscribers: interlinear with phonetic transcription.
It's a very literal, grammatically wrong translation into German.
