I'm just coming back to language learning after a break of a couple of years.
I'm really looking forward to starting again as I've done my homework first and believe that I've got the right courses to learn Spanish (feel free to correct me if I'm wrong lol. I love Spain and the Canary Islands and love the Spanish people and their way of live (I live in Scotland!). Oh and I love the food and wine too.
My study plan is to use the following in parallel...
Assimil - Spanish With Ease - 1 lesson each day (30 minutes)
Paul Noble Spanish - Listen for 30 minutes a day
Language Transfer Spanish - Listen for 30 minutes a day
My current starting progress is -
: Assimil - Spanish with Ease Lessons : 1/108
: Paul Noble Spanish : 1/3
: The Language Transfer Spanish : 1/90

Assimil - New French With Ease - 1 lesson each day (30 minutes)
Paul Noble French - Listen whenever I have free time such as driving, walking, lying in bed
French In Action - watch one episode each day
Babbel - 30 minutes each day
Sounds like fun! I'm familiar with both Assimil and FiA. Both have been used very successfully by many people here on the forum. And I like the idea of filling up little bits of free time with Paul Nobel French—learning how to steal moments here are there is one of the keys to success.
Here are two thoughts, which you may consider or ignore as you wish:
- You'll need to follow through with regular study for around 6 months to get your French to practical level. There are some good tricks for this: You could get a "year at a glance" calendar and mark off each day you study for at least 20 minutes. (Try to build some nice streaks!) If you need accountability with teeth, you could try a more drastic solution like Beeminder. Or ask around; people here have lots of tricks to stick with a language.
- You may want to avoid spreading your attention too thin between too many resources. If your life gets suddenly busier, it's better to continue trucking along with the course you're getting the most of out, instead of trying to do everything every day and failing. You can still use the other courses when you get a free moment, of course.

Re: George's French Start...
Thank you for the tips emk.
The idea of having a "Year At A Glance" calendar displayed someplace visual and marking it with the time spent studying each day is great - Thanks! That should be a great motivator
Understood about the spread too thin. My main study will be Assimil and Paul Noble to begin with if things get too busy lol.
Thanks
George

Re: George's French Start...
Welcome to the forum, George! The main thing in learning a language is to be consistent and persistent. Being persistent will keep you in the game until you can be consistent. being consistent will win the game. Just remember there are good days and bad days in language-learning. We all have them. Also remember that despite the course hype, it will take more time than you think.
I agree with emk. There are so many resources available for a big language like French that it can be easy to spread yourself too thin. It's something to keep in mind as you go along- don't bite off more than you can chew.
