Week 19

Italian

Charles Bukowski (Pulp, 182 pages) was a real fun; surreal, violent, cynical, extremely colloquial - more or less it has all the characteristics that I usually hate in literature but somehow I found it enjoyable. Maybe because of the way the American English slang was translated to Italian lingua parlata.

Curently reading+listening:
Image
Pier Paolo Pasolini: Ragazzi di vita (1956) (p. 19/282, episodes 1 and 2, Ad Alta voce)
This will be a hard work. Pasolini (Italian writer, poet, filmmaker and intellectual) is generally known as one of the most eloquent Italian writers and his passion for dialects reflects in all of his works. Ragazzi di vita combines Romanesco (in dialogues) and narrative registers of the standard Italian. I already wrote somewhere and I want to repeat it: you can't fully understand the Italian language and culture without the insight in local dialects. For me this is a very exciting part of the language learning. The book provides a basic Romanesco-Italian dictionary and that should help me a lot. I don't expect that the understanding will be high as with other books I read in Italian but hopefully I'll learn many new words and expressions.

Just like with Calvino, I discovered on the very begging of the novel an old song called E sotto er monumento de Mazzini. It was a good occasion to learn some new dirty parolacce.

Another nice old song in Romanesco: Barcarolo romano (qua invece non ci sono delle parolacce)

French

Officially stopped attending my French class. Reason: tired after work, I just wasn't able to concentrate. The alternative might be Italki teacher during the weekends.

Week 20

Italiano

Image
Paolo Giordano: Les humeurs insolubles (2013) (titre original: Il nero e l'argento) (137 pages)

Week 22

Italian

Reading+listening activity:
Image
Giorgio Bassani - Il giardino dei Finzi-Contini (1962)
Listening: episodes 1-12/25 (Ad alta voce)
Reading: pages 1-78/158

This interesting novel chronicles the life of the Italian Jewish family Finzi-Contini in the northern Italian city of Ferrara. Although it mainly focuses on the relationships between the major characters, the shadow of creeping fascism, especially the racial laws that restricted Jews' participation in Italian society, looms over all the novel's events. Bassani uses a very high register of the standard Italian (descriptions, long sentences, rich vocabulary), but it's still much easier than my last novel (Pasolini). For some reason, the audio-book and the pdf-text that I found on the internet don't match completely; it must be some adaptation because the basic text is generally the same - the only difference is that the audio-book uses sometimes other synonyms, for example:
(Audio) ....(Text)
infatti - difatti
completamente - del tutto
poverina - poveretta
temporaneamente - una volta tanto
...

French

(Re)reading:
Image
Stefan Zweig - La confusion des sentiments (1927), pages 57/124
It's the second time I read this book. It was certainly not one of my first books in French; however, at that time (I read it two years ago) I decided to start to read regularly in French. That period was quite important for my language learning. Now, I want to use all my reading experience to read it again - without any particular reason, just because I tend to return to some books. Zweig is a great author, my comprehension now is over 90% with this novel, so I can focus on details and enjoy it.

Week 23

Italiano
