Monolingual Dutch dictionary recommendations
I'm looking for a single-volume, (ideally) hardcover, monolingual Dutch dictionary. I would like something with example sentences and definitions that aren't too "cursory" (e.g. just giving a synonym), if possible. I've done some googling but haven't had a lot of luck. Any recommendations?

IMHO, there's nothing better than the van Dale dictionaries. I've attached a screenshot of a definition from the Van Dale Groot woordenboek hedendaags Nederlands.tastyonions wrote:I'm looking for a single-volume, (ideally) hardcover, monolingual Dutch dictionary. This dictionary is also available for free with some Kindle apps.

Yeah, I was starting to worry that van Dale was the only real contender for a good Dutch dictionary. Maybe I'll just bite the bullet and shell out 100 Euros for the two-volume hardcover...or try to find it used somewhere.

Re: Monolingual Dutch dictionary recommendations
I have this Van Dale monolingual dictionary and I really like it. It has the example sentences you are looking for. It is not that expensive and it has a CD-ROM with pronunciation.
Nederlands Als Tweede Taal (NT2) (Dutch) Paperback from Amazon.com
There is a bad review in English on the Dutch bol.nl site that you might consider.

This dictionary is a nice size and the text is very clear and readable. I use it a lot.

Thanks for pointing that out. The content seems to be what I am after. I browsed through some pages on van Dale's site and also found a video with what looks to be the current edition:

I do wish it were a bit larger and sturdier-looking, but I don't feel ready to drop 100 euros on a dictionary just yet, so I may go with "Nederlands als tweede taal." :-)

For me, it is exactly the right size and it is quite durable. Easy to use. I have the version as shown in the Amazon ad.

I prefer dictionaries by Prisma, both on-line and print versions.
