https://pl.wiktionary.org/wiki/zn%C3%B3j means hard work or effort.
That makes perfectly sense - if you work in hot weather, your work surely is hard and you sweat. But which of the three corresponding meanings was the original one? All three are yet somehow connected.

I thought it would be fun years ago to create an excel doc, each tab another Slavic language, and in each tab list false friends for that language with other Slavic languages, along the lines of Russian понос and BCS ponos. Then I found that someone already created one. :lol:

What the hell, Netflix? Why do you drop series all the time?

Went to go watch The Sniffer today and it wasn't on Netflix. Assumed I was remembering incorrectly so went to Prime. There it was. Weird. Weirder still when I went to the series page and it didn't show I'd ever watched it. Huh? I brought up episode 3 and pressed play.

English subtitles. What? So I went to cc and clicked it. That put another line of English subtitle text over the already-there English subtitles. What the hell is going on?

Ugh, I hate when that happens. I can't NOT read the subtitles, no matter how hard I try, and with no way to turn them off, I think I'll not watch The Sniffer for a while. Dammit.

I think Cainntear said that in Scotland the Gaelic TV programs used to have hardcoded English subs, so people would tape cardboard to the screen to block them. Maybe you could try something similar?

(Also, being unable to stop reading subtitles is so common, it would be interesting to have some research as to why...)

I'm getting frustrated. My searching for audiobooks in BCS is coming up blank. How can I do L-R without it? I have several BCS books that I want to read in hardcopy: HP1, Angels & Demons, Da Vinci Code, Metro 2033. But none of them in audio. I don't think L-R is technically listening in L1 and reading in L2. But if I can't find any audiobooks for the L2, how am I supposed to L-R?

Ugh.

Yesterday did only 10 minutes of Russian tv news. Spent the rest of the time reading and reviewing the introduction chapter in my Coptic text. My Coptic class started! So excited!

I read a lot on L-R today. I've got a couple plans below for the summer, depending upon some things. Yes, I know the L-R I mention below isn't technically L-R. Guess what? I don't care.

Not saying I'm doing any or all of the below. Just thinking through plans right now.

BCS Resurrection
Background: in 2000 I had a 3L/2+R on the DLPT IV in this language. Kept in the 2+ range for a few years after that before stopping taking the DLPT. In summer 2018 I went through some books and GLOSS and took the Reading DLPT (now a 5) and got a whopping 0+. :oops: Put BCS aside for some future date.
Goal: Would love to get it back, to about the 2/2 level.
Now: Decided this time instead of going through my grammar and workbooks again, I'd try L-R. What I'm finding is the "resource hunt" (h/t Xmmm) is difficult; apparently they don't do audiobooks in that neck of the woods. Which is sad, because sitting on my shelves waiting to be L-R'd are BCS versions of HP1, Angels & Demons, da Vinci Code, Metro 2033, Bridge on the Drina. If I can't find an audiobook of any of them, then I'll do:
0: Read the book in English;
1: Listen to it in English while reading it in BCS;
2: Repeat till I'm sick to my stomach.
Before and after I'll take the reading online diagnostic test at DLI-FLC to see if my proficiency improves.

Italian L-R
Background: I took a beginner course in early 2019 and took the DLPT in May 2019, got a 1L/2R.
Goal: I enjoyed it and was amazed at my DLPT scores. I think it would be cool to get it to 1+/1+ levels, at which point my employer would pay for some instruction with a teacher!
Now: I have found some Italian audiobook and ebook versions of the books I want to read, so that should be less of a problem than with BCS.
0: Read the book in English;
1: Listen to it in Italian while following along in the ebook in Italian;
2: Listen to it in Italian while reading it in English;
3: Repeat step 2 till I'm sick of it.
Before and after I'll take the dialang Italian listening and reading to see where I am.

Danish Summer
Background: There's a Danish young lady working on my base. I've spoken to her about tutoring me and she amenable. Only issue is she's applied to nursing schools and if she gets in, she may vacate this position here and move sometime in the summer.
Goal: Fun.
Now: I have a copy of The Way to Danish which I bought in Monterey years and years ago. I'll work through that. Not sure what else I'll work through, but I know I get bored using only one book.
Before and after, not sure what I'll do. Perhaps do the placement test at Duolingo? Not sure I'd get very far with the dialang listening and reading, but who knows.

For the two "L-R" sets above, I'll track the hours I'm working through steps 1-2 and 1-3.
