DaveAgain wrote:I was reading an article about vocabulary size today that stressed the importance of some common verb prefixes.
On the basis of frequency patterns of prefix and particle verbs, this article argued that three prefixes, i.e., be-, er-, and ver- and four particles, i.e., an-, auf-, aus-, and ein- should be introduced and practiced explicitly in first-year German textbooks, including a discussion of how they modify the semantics, aspectual characteristics, and argument structure of the base verb.

So I did a web search on 'common german prefixes', which produced the Fluent U article below.

EDIT
Restricting the web search to .ac.uk produced the article below.

I totally agree, those prefixes are massive!

Here are a couple of great articles about major prefixes:

https://yourdailygerman.com/german-prefix-ver-meaning/

They use a lot of forced humor so you might love them or hate them, but it's good information either way.

Des Kaisers neue Kleider

Sonntag, 12:00 Uhr

Kaiser Friedhelm, der Fesche, hat bald Geburtstag und nichts anzuziehen. Ihn langweilen all seine teuren und prächtigen Roben. Wen stört es schon, dass seine Untertanen am Hungertuch nagen. Als der junge Jakob beim Kaiser vorspricht, ist dieser entzückt. Doch der Kaiser sei gewarnt: Wer dumm ist oder seines Amtes nicht würdig, für den sind diese Kleider unsichtbar!

While watching some Easy German videos, I came across this joke that I hope the Group will appreciate, especially as it's a play on language:

- Two martinis, please.
- Dry?
- Nein, zwei!

[Apologies if you've heard the joke before]
It's things like this that make language learning such fun. I gotta learn German someday!

When I opened up my new German dictionary I discovered that the sections for A, X, Y and Z were missing. It just goes from Bad to Wurst.

Do any of you use dictionaries/translator widgets in your web browsers?

(Ideally I'd like something to use with Firefox.)

Butzkamm's critique of the "German only" approach when teaching German to immigrants. He favours the use of the mother tongue and translation as a vehicle to achieve better results than with the current aproach in Goethe Institute ..etc

http://fremdsprachendidaktik.de/

Question for UK residents.

Is there a german language magazine I would be likely to find in a newsagent like WHSmith?

It depends on the branch, however my local WHSmith usually stocks Der Spiegel and occasionally Stern.
