job options

Postby jimmy » Fri Apr 26, 2019 7:42 pm

my english is presumably not so much good. the TOEFL test result (score) was 51 of 120 3 years before. now I predict that it has been better if I take exam.(but it will not exceed 80 in my opinion, not sure though (presumably between 65-80))

and I did not take any else exam. I have mathematics degree.(BSc) and took several master courses. (meanwhile,I am independent scientist/author.)

but now I wonder whether there exist any job option for me with my these qualifications.

other qualifications: I know kurdish (native) ,turkish (native) and very little chinese. I can improve chinese but nees job first.

If you are very good at mathematics, yes, you may have job options based on your network of people that you know or can develop. But if you are thinking of immigrating you must improve you language skills to be able to work in an environment effectively.

Can you actively work to improve your English?

Hi,

thank you for your response.

I am not sure what you mean with being very good in math. But I can represent these details about me.

I submitted one of my short papers to a good mathematics journal (it is a member of well known journal group)

and now it is still being peer reviewed (as other authors,of course I cannot guarantee the publication)

one another paper (it was not relevant to mathematical science. İt was about social sciences)
has been approved to be published with major corrections

meanwhile, mathematics is NOT a set of instructions or it is not a series of books
it is a discipline instead

I taught mathematics (worked as a math teacher) around 2-3 years.

And there exist one problem , most of countries that I looked some, are requiring high toefl scores.
(at least 80 is required everywhere, also, the min score is 100 in common)

I do not say that I cannot take this score but it does not seem so much probable in a short time.
(e.g. in 6 months)

Yes, mathematics is a field. We don't know each other but, as background, I have several engineering degrees, was a research scientist and taught aspects of Biomedical Engineering at the university level years ago.

What I meant by "being very good in the field of mathematics" is that the options that you have are:

- a researcher in the field of mathematics - through publications, your network, you need to demonstrate that you have the ability to carry out original and impactful research in your specialisation within the field of mathematics. A position will depend not on one publication, but on a series of work.

- a teacher at the university or high school level - this tends to have specific educational requirement where you need to demonstrate the ability to teach on top of your grasp of the field of mathematics. This usually requires strong language abilities.

- applied mathematics in the public or private sector - lots of different opportunities exist from finance, to statistics, to data sciences, to applied mathematical programming...

Since you've already worked as a teacher, you might validate your degree and experience by getting another degree in a local university. To do that you will probably need more than just a good TOEFL exam score but actual overall B2/C1 competencies. As scores, A TOEFL score of 80 is a strong B2 and 100 is about C1.

When you say that you've taught for 2-3 years, at what level have you taught?

You are currently at about the B1 level from the scores you listed about. Getting to B2 or C1 in 6 months is going to require a very strong effort.
What is your plan to get to this level?
The people of the site can help validate a strategy and plan but the effort is all yours :). Good luck.

hi,

thank you for your this post. and we are sorry that we could not reply for a long time until now.
I can say that I had worked as a math teacher at primary school (grade 5 to 8) for around 2-3 years.
but some problems might occur to prove this information.

because in my country, you work more but are not being paid as equally as you work and your social security is not being satisfied as same you as you work.

also ,if holiday periods are not included, then this my experience might appear only as (or up to) around 8 months.(not more)
now ,My only one article has been approved to be published with major corections. (the other two articles are still being assessed)

therefore,I cannot promise for a series of publication.(as a result,I can say that I have no publication yet. because the revision has not been applied still now)

but please be rest assured that I am quite willing in academy and I have some rudimental scientific projects.

for language I do not do more things unfortunately. but watching films which have subtitles probably would be fine.)

I was not aware from this option, hereby I also clearly see that my country is not good. because none of these options is known here. :(

unfortunately journals are appearing to be quite strict in language skills. I predict this because my first article (which has been approved to be published) includes comments of editor ,saying something like ;"author is highly advised to send his article to a copyright editor before final submission of revision)

also, one another my article had been actepted by a journal but as I detected that that journal was being accused with being a predatory journal,I retracted (but thay journal had not given to me 10 points for my literature's language overall 10) editor given to me only 8 overall 10)

and most of my article's sections consisted of/contained quitations/citations.

Hi Jimmy,

I too have not been on the site recently an likely will be rarely here for the next weeks due to family issues.

My suggestion would be that you find time to work on grammar, reading and writing if your primary method of communication is going to be written professional texts. Pay attention to details, the above text is full of structural errors that you shouldn't be making, even in the informal setting of the forum. Capitalisation and punctuation are there to provide information and demonstrate attentiveness to your reader.

Being told outright that you should use a copyright editor is good feedback - many of the scientific articles I've read as a reviewer needed some sort of editorial work. Take that advice to heart and get your articles read before first submission.

If your future move to a country where you can teach maths or publish depends on having strong English skills you'll need to really focus some effort on active study. The theme park work may help with general speaking practice but the subjects are hardly going to be professional business English or scientific English.

yes,you are right that I need to improve my language for professional english.
but here more than studying,I need to concentrate on how to study. because I experienced that it is a bit time consuming.

for instance ,because of some various reasons;I am not sure which of these will be better for selection

*** a course center
*** self study.

I would point out that I am supporting contemporary educational system.
