Amy's 非常好的 autrichien Abenteuer (FR, DE, 中文)TAC 2016

Postby amyhere » Sat Nov 07, 2015 9:32 am

EDIT-TAC NOTICE: I've decided to keep using this log for TAC 2016, seeing as I've only had it for 2 months of 2016. 2016 posts begin on page 3.

--

Hello all!

I've been looking around HTLAL for a couple of years and now this forum too, but I've never really written much on either for one reason or another. Although this is neither the start of my German journey or my Austrian adventure, I've decided to start a log now as a way to track my progress through my 3 languages - German, French and Mandarin.

A little about me - I come from Australia and finished secondary school about a year ago. I'm currently working as an Au-Pair in Austria and living with a host family. I've been learning languages for about 4 years.

French
Past: 4 years, 3 months in France, school classes & self study

I started learning French about 4 years ago when I went on high school exchange to Bourgogne for 3 months. I went in with the basics I'd learnt from 3 years of school classes, so essentially nothing. I had no idea how to learn languages. Through some discovery of the polyglot community and trialling lots of different methods, I'd estimate I've got to approximately a C1 level. Methods used include extensive reading, reading aloud, lang-8, sparse irregular italki tutoring, binge-watching TV series, high school classes, assimil and keeping in touch with friends.
Present: ~C1, stronger in passive, conversation group once a week
My current French maintenance is rather pathetic and inadequate - up until July I was steadily improving mostly through reading novels daily and watching and listening to French every now and then - but once I got to Austria and had to really push my German that got a lot more scarce. I do now go to a French C1 reading and conversation group once a week though which I find to be at least a little bit useful. My main problem is deterioration active skills though, and the fact that so much German practice has seemed to "replace" some of the French in my head - if I know the German easily then the French just doesn't seem to want to come to me. And since I'm so used to speaking French without to much thought and concentration this now leads to my putting German into French, avoiding which is now my main priority.
Goals: Strengthen generally and upkeep, possible C1 exam
I'm hoping to start studying a semester of Transcultural Communication (essentially pre-trans/interp) at the University here starting March just as a way to improve my languages and meet people, so I'd like to put more time into improving my French (and getting rid of the German in it) once I've got German a bit more under control, but I think I can mostly let that go until Jan/Feb and just continue going to my meetings in the meantime.

German
Past: 6 months of flirting, 4 months intensive in Austria, self studying and DAF classes in Austria

Up until about a year ago I didn't know much German at all, just a couple of basics. For the first six months of this year I work non-intensively on German, preparing to come to Austria in July. I completed the duolingo tree, about half of Teach Yourself, German Demystified (a basic grammar book with excercises) and learnt about 1000 words on memrise. It was enough for me to be able to come to Austria and not feel completely frustrated at lack of language knowledge but I had a long way to go. In the 4 months since then, I've gone from a shaky A2 to about a B2 level. I've learnt about a further thousand words on memrise and about 500 cloze sentences on anki, while also having obviously learnt quite a bit of vocabulary that hasn't ever gone through an SRS. I've read my first novel and quite a bit of newspaper, and I've also watched a lot of TV and movies. I've been going to about 6 hours per week of B2 classes and 3 hours per week of ÖSD B2 test preparation, because that test has a lot of (in my opinion) wacky things they test you on that you're not going to pick up on your own. (Describing a photo using a set formula for 5-7 minutes??) I've also completed 26/88 of the em Übungsgrammatik book. I've met with two language partners and I talk to Austrian people every day, especially in my host family. My job even involves speaking to the child I look after in English.. but 90% of the time he still answers in German so I've learnt allll of the German kindergarten naughty words.
Present: ~B2, anki cloze, DAF classes, test prep classes, extensive native materials and talking with natives, grammar workbook
I have about a B2 level in German and I'm reasonably confident for my exam and so is my teacher but I'm pulling out all the stops... because I'd like to study at Uni Wien in March and I need this certificate for that (and I don't want to waste my €126!). I feel that my biggest weaknesses are vocabulary (especially active), use of correct prepositions and a few grammar constructions that I haven't quite got down (eg. Konjunktiv II when saying the equivalent of "if I ___(past), I would ___", I just don't seem to be able to get the fact that that needs two conditionals in German).
Goals: B2 exam, study in German @ Uni Wien, improve more specialised skills, possible C1 exam
In the short term (next month or so) I'm planning on spending most of my study on working on all the things above, so learning a lot of new vocabulary through anki cloze sentences and extensive reading, practising grammar in isolation with my em book and practising both in output through lang-8, practise writing for my classes and general speaking. In the longer term (until I leave Austria next July) I'd like to work on my ability to read, listen to and talk about technical topics I'm interested in such as biology, genetics and neuroscience, language learning and linguistics etc., as well as building my general skills in listening, speaking and reading to a much more comfortable level. And of course, I'm going to be working on my German as I study in German at Uni Wien. I'm also considering taking a C1 test at some point next year.

Mandarin
Past: Flirting for over a year, SRS, NPCR, HSK word lists, assimil

Similar to German, I've been flirting with Mandarin for about a year, but also a little bit before that, just doing little bits and pieces when I've had time. I've learnt a few hundred words through a variety of methods, and I'm able to form basic sentences. I've done up to chapter 5 in NPCR and I'm stilling regularly reviewing that through anki, I've learnt the HSK1 wordlist and part of HSK2 but likely forgotten most of it that I haven't used since, I've completed up to about chapter 30 of assimil, but also likely forgotten, and I've been taking a Mandarin class (through German) where we use a book simply called "Chinesisch" which is quite fast moving and similar to NPCR, where we're up to chapter 6.
Present: weekly classes, SRS revision
I'm currently going to my hour and a half Mandarin class here every Tuesday. It actually has a surprisingly fast pace for a community class and the teacher doesn't seem to mind that a lot of the class (especially those not very invested) are struggling, which is a total plus for me. I'm also reviewing the NPCR vocab and sentences I previously entered into anki by writing out both the hanzi and pinyin.
Goals: build a good base, NPCR, assimil & Chinesisch, go to China, second major in Chinese
I'm hoping for a big future with Mandarin lasting many years, but starting with a planned two month visit next August/September and then hopefully majoring in Chinese (in a diploma beside a degree in biology/statistics/bioinformatics) at university. Once I've got a bit stronger in my German (and passed my test so I can actually go to university here), I'm going to put a lot more effort into Chinese, including finishing possibly all of NPCR, assimil and Chinesisch and practising with natives to set me up for my visit. I might also work a bit with an italki tutor. Obviously I'll also continue with my Mandarin class until it finishes in January, and maybe then continue it for a second semester if timetabling permits.

So as a bit of a rap up, my main goals are:
1. Currently working on German as intensively as possible, working on vocabulary, selected grammar, and preparing for my exam, while obviously continuing to work with lots of natives and native material.
2. Keep up with learning little bits of French and Mandarin when possible.
3. Once I'm more secure with my German, I'll put a lot more time into Mandarin and try to engage a bit more with French.
4. Not fail my university study in German.

I'll be posting weekly with my goals for the next week and my progress, as I think this will help me to focus a bit more on progress in a time where the sea of things to be learnt is huge.

Good luck! I also set myself weekly goals - they're good for motivation, and it's nice to be able to switch things up every now and again. But I'm really lazy about it. You're goals are definitely superpowered compared to mine!

Look forward to reading your progress :)

I feel like my new shorter-term goals have really been pushing me this week and I'm sure I've learnt much more than I otherwise would have, so here's where I'm up to.

I'd also like to point out that I'm not counting German/Austrian TV or radio or movies anywhere - because I get lots and lots of it. I probably watch about 5 hours of TV/movies a week, and I generally understand it pretty well, so I'll just keep doing that when I have the chance and want to.

German
Anki cloze sentences: 700
em-Übungsgrammatik exercises: 36/88
B2 oral exam practices: 4
B2 exam writing practise pieces: 7
B2 exam reading practises: 3
Novels pages read: 437
Native podcast hours: 2

Let's see how the week goes!

As I said this week went pretty well. I ended up deleting 40 anki cards for words I'm using daily and don't need to review, so my count is currently 700, but I actually surpassed my goal. I ended up changing my goal for grammar exercises halfway through the week.. because for the first half I thought I had set my goal as 8, so I didn't put in quite as much time as I should have and didn't want to push it too much. As far as my language tandem partner goes, I ended up being invited to a traditional fully-dirndled Hütereinzug when I was supposed to be meeting, so no organised language but I actually met and had substantial conversations with quite a few Austrians at that and throughout the week so we'll call that a success anyway. You can see my lang-8 posts here: http://lang-8.com/306885/journals to see where I'm at, and the latest German one is actually a transcript of a recording of my attempt at one of the ÖSD B2 exam tasks - a 5-7 Minute picture description and discussion of the themes involved. I actually found it really helpful to listen to what I'd done and transcribe it all - it made it a lot more clear to me where all my errors are. The recordings can be found here: http://vocaroo.com/i/s0R4Oi9afFAQ & here: http://vocaroo.com/i/s1OXwBNryGfl. I'd love it if anyone with a high level in German could comment at all on it and give me some suggests for improvement (ignoring the ridiculous amount of rambling, but apparently that's not too bad for the exam, we have approx. 5 minutes prep time, most of which I use for sure-ing up vocab).

Week Two Goals- 3 weeks until ÖSD B2 (German) exam
German:
1. Learn 200 more cloze sentences, total 900.
2. Complete the 10 em exercises on Konjunktiv II, Passiv, Nomen-Verben-Verbindungen, Predicates & Imperativ, total 46/88.
3. Complete 1 more writing exam writing piece and 2 more oral practices, total 8 & 6.
4. Listen to 1 hour of podcasts, total 3 hours.
5. Read novel every evening.
6. Write 2 lang-8 pieces, total 4.

Mandarin:
1. Learn chapter 8 of Chinesisch well.

French:
1. 1 lang-8 piece, total 2.

I also realised during last week that I had already done chapter 6 of Chinesisch, so I worked on chapter 7 last week and will look at chapter 8 this week. I was considering putting parts of the book into anki, but I've decided to leave it until my Chinese course is over at the end of the year, to let as much as possible come naturally. I'm also decreasing my German anki goal slightly from 250 to 200 compared to last week, because my reviews were starting to become a drag as they got over 100.

I have definitely found the goals to be great so far, I just need to wait and see if they keep working once the novelty wears off. And I agree, my goals are pretty busy, but at the same time I work part-time and live in Austria, so there's no excuse not to give it my all - plus it's motivating when I can use what I've learnt every day. And Austrian and very quick to complement my German, which is also motivating. I think they're just really used to aupairs putting little-to-no effort into learning German if they're an English native speaker.

I've spent a bit of time now thinking about where I'm going to go with my study after my exam, so here's what I'm planning so far.

Last week I finished the novel "Das Rosie Projekt", a translation of an Australian book. I found it to be of about a medium difficulty. I have since moved on to "Harry Potter und der Stein der Weisen" which is obviously quite a bit easier, which is working really well because I understand the book and know the story well enough to be able to guess the meaning of a lot of words I've never seen before - very useful! I'm planning on continuing this book and then continuing with the series until I'm too bored with it. The other great thing about the series is that you can easily get the audio books, which I've done and I'm splitting my reading time between reading alone, reading & listening and reading, listening & shadowing.

I'm going to continue with my active studying until my exam, but then I plan on toning it down a lot and focussing much more on native content, reading a lot, watching a lot and listening a lot. I'll probably also stop adding as many anki cards. Currently I'm adding pretty much any words or phrases that I wouldn't be able to use actively, so I'll move more towards only adding completely opaque words, to boost my access to native content. I'm hoping that my exposure, as well as my daily language use and the 6hrs/week of B2 classes that I'll have until the end of January will work on my active skills by themselves. I'm thinking I'll still need to write quite a bit on lang-8 though to keep these skills up. Hopefully this will leave me more time so I can start back onto Assimil Chinese and also getting onto the task of writing a mini-guide for highschool students of French in Australia, hopefully passing on some of the knowledge of this forum and HTLAL, and well as what I've learnt through helping out students preparing for the exams.

So this week was going really well, I was quite motivated and right on track to finish everything... until Thursday when I travelled about an hour to my German class where we're preparing for our exam in two weeks. The problem was, the teacher wasn't there when I got there. And she still wasn't there an hour later. This wouldn't have been a huge deal, except that this was my last lesson before my exam as I'm spending this Wednesday until the Thursday after in Germany so I won't be there for the last two sessions - and she has all of my corrected practice exams (that I haven't seen yet). So I was quite annoyed for most of Friday and didn't get the exam practice in. Now I just have to decide if it's worth paying more so I can get an earlier train back on Thursday so I can go to the last class..
Other than that, as I said, it was going well, I'm nearly halfway through Harry Potter und der Stein der Weisen listening to the audio book most of the time while I'm reading and sometimes also shadowing. I've noticed my comprehension of TV shows has gone through the roof in the last week or so, I'm finding it so much easier to hear individual words. I'm not sure if this is because of the modified L-R I've been doing, but I would say it's a factor.

Week Three & Four Goals - up until ÖSD B2 (German) exam

So I'm going to be in Germany for the week and a day leading up to my exam, so essentially I've got slightly less than a week of study time (I'll try to bring a small amount with me to do there, but I'll be pretty busy and I'll also be backpacking so I don't want to bring lots of extra weight. I also won't be able to access anki while I'm away, so I'll tone down my adding of new cards leading up to when I leave so I'm not completely overwhelmed.

German:
1. Learn 70 more cloze sentences, total 1000.
2. Complete the 5 em exercises, total 51/88.
3. Complete as many writing, listening, reading & speaking practise exams as possible.
4. Listen to 4 hour of podcasts, total 7 hours.
5. Read novel every evening, newspaper when I don't have a novel with me.
6. Put all writing pieces up on lang-8.

Mandarin:
1. Do whatever sounds fun after I've finished my exam.

French:
1. Same as above.

I've been thinking more about what I want to do after I've finished my exam (after leaving that weekend as a study break) and my plan so far is pretty much to get as much exposure as possible for a while (at least a month or two):
1. Do approximately 7 hours of reading and 7 hours of listening/watching in German each week.
2. Add 100 flashcards a week of completely opaque vocabulary, I'm hoping that exposure alone and using the language daily will help with active vocabulary.
3. Continue going to my German classes (which end at the end of January), where I know we'll be going very thoroughly through Passiv and Kunjunktiv II and practising lots of writing. The grammar will all be revision for me.
4. After that in the rest of my time (I work 19 hours a week so I should still have more time) I'll start working through Assimil Mandarin and/or New Practical Chinese Reader and/or Chinesisch.
5. I'll also be trying for about an hour each of reading and listening in French, as well as writing on lang-8 at least once a week.

I'll have to try it out to know how realistic/hard/easy-to-achieve that is, so I'll probably end up tweaking it quite a bit, but that's where I'm currently at.

加油 for your exam!

I have never used the Practical Chinese Reader myself, but a friend of mine did and is full of praise and looking through it it really looks like a great textbook. As far as I know some of them are also available in German, if you want to continue learning through that language, I'm just not sure if all volumes have been translated.
