Re: trui's dagboek

Harry Potter 1-3
De Zwarte magiers triologie van Trudi Canavan
Posterijen van Terry Pratchett

Nederlandse boeken:

De verborgen universiteit trilogie 1-2 van Natalie Koch

Harry Potter was echt moeilijk het eerste keer! Maar ik denk dat het me misschien op de andere fantasieboeken voorbereid heeft. :)

Re: trui's Dutch and Deutsch Days

Postby trui » Fri Apr 05, 2019 9:04 pm

So I've decided to switch this log to English so everyone can read it. I'll still post in Dutch occassionally though or write in Dutch and give an English translation, etc. We zullen zien.

Not much exciting has happened language wise, although I am around one and a half months into Deutsch. So far so good. It shouldn't be too hard to get to B1, knowing Dutch already to the level I do, and once I'm B1 it'll be easy to stay motivated from there, especially since I've always wanted to learn German. So I'm pretty happy about it. I haven't been able to do that much though, being quite busy with taking 6 courses in Dutch full-time. They're aimed at learners, not native speakers, but most if not all of the texts we're reading are for natives at this point in the program. Right now I'm working my way through Max Havelaar among other texts. https://www.dbnl.org/tekst/mult001maxh15_01/mult001maxh15_01_0001.php

I'm also planning on picking up French still, one of these days. I'm even starting to review what little I learned years ago now, but it'll be a lot more slow going than German. After German and French, I'm not sure what I'd want to learn, but that decision is years down the road, so I'll think of that when I'm B2 in all 3.

But yeah, just a little update. :)

I've been more and more busy with uni lately, but on the plus side, since all of my courses are in Dutch, that means I've been more and more busy with Dutch. :)

Even so, I've still managed to have some time to work on my German and other hobbies. Right now I've started working my way through the Goethe pro vocabulary lists (I found direct links to them on Goethe's site through a google search). The A1 one has 650 words, A2 1300, and B1 2400. My goal is to learn those words, starting with the A1 list, and then start reading everything I can get my hands on. The word lists include the previous words in them, so the words I'll know once I finish will be ~2400.

How I'll be learning them is by using them when chatting to people (usually through text but speaking would work just as well if not better), making sentences with them independent of that, possibly using flashcards, and maybe even using some anki. I think the sentence/using them in practice method is ideal, especially since these are words I'll want to be able to actively use, but flashcards and/or anki is kind of tempting, even though I don't like Anki that much, because it's easier and thus easier to keep up with.

I'm aiming for 15 words a day since that's how much the vocab learning portion of one of my Dutch courses expects us to learn, so I feel like it's a good pace. Not too slow and not too fast. Of course that means I should be learning 30 words a day (Dutch and German)... which is a bit, but German isn't too hard so I think I can do it.

If anyone has any tips and advice, or whatever, feel free to comment you wish. Don't worry. I'm learning the words with the genders ;)

I've been a bit lazy lately, and impatient! Ich will schon Deutsch kennen!!

But alas, even with some intermediate Dutch in my back pocket, it'll take a while before I'm able to read much of anything. I have started to use the DasErste app to start to watch some German shows with German subtitles, and it's already reminding me of my previous struggles when I was first learning Dutch :) Vocab wise, I've gotten a bit lazy and started to use apps like lingvist and clozemaster. I still think studying 15 words a day, writing sentences for each one, etc., is a better method for me, as it helps me remember the gender much better, but that takes a lot more effort, and so I often don't end up doing it consistently. So clozemaster it is for now.

I've also installed 5 news apps that give me a good variety of news across varying viewpoints, and I can already understand an okay portion of some articles, thanks to my Dutch and my developing German vocabulary.

So yeah, my German is slowly going places. I just need to stick to it, keep learning every day, and I'm sure I'll be reading the famous German authors that are half the motivation for my German study in the not too distant future. :D

"Kennen" is a bit of a false friend here. "Können" would be a better choice: Ich möchte schon Deutsch können!

I came across another false friend today. "Schlimm... that means slim (smart), right? But how can you have a smart nightmare... Let's see... oh. It means bad!" Dutch is helping immensely with my German, but you gotta watch out for those edge cases!

I haven't done too much German this past week, but I have watched a couple episodes of Tiere bis unters Dach, and I'm really enjoying it so far :) I've also started reading Sandra and Woo again, a comic I loved reading years ago. I forgot that there was both an English and German version! The comic is still actively updated, but I just had stopped reading it for some reason. So I've started reading it from the beginning auf Deutsch!

I've also done some more clozemaster and dabbled in some French. I'm still not sure when I'll start actively studying French; I might wait until I'm B1 in German, but we'll see.

Aber ja! It's been a pretty fun week overall.
