That was the book that got Solzhenitsyn into so much trouble with the Soviets. My thesis director, who was a Russian-American who had done some Russian>English translations, knew one Solzhenitsyn's liaisons when Solzhenitsyn was living here in the US. My thesis director would tell me stories he had heard about how difficult Solzhenitsyn was to work with. But I suppose if I was treated like he was by my country's press and government, I wouldn't be a happy little ray of sunshine myself either.

Well, I'm reading it in French translation for now, since I don't speak Russian yet, but I'll get to the real thing someday. (Although I am something of a Russiaboo )
Yes, if I remember correctly, that was one of the many works he wrote which got him into trouble, although this is my first exposure to him, so I can not fully comment. He is a phenomenal author, however, and I have deep respect for his refusal to stop writing, even at great personal cost. In fact, I've met Orthodox who venerate him as a saint even. I'm only on page 30 of 189 of my translation, so I've still got a ways to go, however.

Woke up this morning to find that university is cancelled today, because, ghasp it snows in northern North America. I guess I'll read Solzhenitsyn and Petrarch most of the day, then.

Re: Languages Without Borders - Pfifltrigg Pi
Je fais-tu vraiment deux soumissions consécutives? Sacrement!

Re: Languages Without Borders - Pfifltrigg Pi
I'm not dead! (Just dead inside.)
In other news, I started Ukrainian this past week! I'd honestly forgotten how much fun a shiny new language can be. I really enjoy Ukrainian, it sounds so amazing, both spoken and sung, honestly more aesthetic than Russian in my opinion. Cyrillic, of course, is also amazing, and Ukrainian, with its apostroph looks really unique. I'm also looking forward to being able to, with a bit of training, read Russian as well. So far, I've been doing Duolingo, since I couldn't really find anything else free. Honestly, it's pretty terrible, but I'll keep working through it unless someone cares to point me to something better.
Also, if anyone has any YouTube links to Ukrainian folk music, I'd love to see them. I've pretty much been listening to
and
on repeat all week and, as much as I love both of them, would like something else. Updates will come more frequently now that I'm back at the grind which is university. (In case you can't tell, I'm not very enthused.)
Edit: I apologize if the songs violate the no-politics rule. I'll take them down if they do.

Re: Languages Without Borders - Pfifltrigg Pi
