If you went to Bratislava or somewhere else which is now Slovakia, I don't see why you shouldn't count it :)

I was 12 years old; this was my first trip without my parents and my first trip abroad. After more than 25 years I can't determine where exactly. It wasn't deep into the country, near the Polish border in the mountains. We visited a monastery and a town. It could be as well in Czechia or as in Slovakia because mountains are along the whole Polish southern border.

Uhmmm, let me see, lots of places,

Santo Domingo, Cuba, Moroco as I was young.
Japan, Turkey, Morocco, UK before to birth 40.

From 40 to 49 riding my motorbike, Andorra, France, Monaco, Liechtenstein, Italia, Swizerland and Austria.

I can to recognize that I am enjoying my motorbike's trips like a baby. I'm coming across with incredible people all around Europe.

New years resolutions: to reach Slovenia and Croatia riding through The Alps. If no now when.

I can HIGHLY recommend Kyrgyzstan. Lovely place. Not easy to get to (from the States), but worth it when you get there.

1) In doubtful cases we generally follow the membership list of the UN - though we have kept Taiwan on the list from the days where it represented the whole of China (now only the People's Republic is represented). All in all we have 196 items on our country list.

2) We follow the map as it is now - so I have only one Germany on my list even though I visited both BRD and DDR in the days of yore, and I have listed Uzbekistan even though it was a Sovjet republic when I visited it.

3) You must spend at least 24 hours in a place without interruption - which means that you have passed through customs and pass control in airports. But for boat trips we accept that you spend 24 hours within the national territory as long as you do set foot on land, and we also grudgingly accept people who somehow got inside a country between the offical border control points.

Example: I have never spent 24 hours in a row within the border of the Vatican so the Vatican is not on my list. And Fiji and Pakistan aren't there either since I only sat a couple of hours in the transfer hall of an airport in those two countries.

There are other lists out there which includes far more places. For instance some lists splits the United Kingdom into a number of countries, but nah... we don't.

When someone asks me how many countries I have visited the usual problem is defining what constitutes a country and what constitutes a visit. With the above rules my list would be something like this:

Europe:
Sweden
Norway
Finland
Denmark
Iceland
Germany
Netherlands
UK
France
Spain
Portugal (Madeira)
Italy
Poland
Czech Republic
Hungary
Slovenia
Serbia
Bosnia
Bulgaria
Russia
Estonia
Latvia
Lithuania
Belarus
Ukraine
Moldova
Cyprus
Asia:
Turkey
Georgia
Armenia
Azerbaijan
Iran
Kazakhstan
Israel
Africa:
Morocco
Mauritania
Mali
Burkina Faso
Niger
Benin
Ghana
Senegal
Guinea-Bissau
South Africa
Mozambique
Malawi
Zambia
Zimbabwe
North America:
USA
Canada
South America:
Brazil
Uruguay
Venezuela

Total: 53

Non-visits:

Belgium (a few hours)
Switzerland (one hour, never left the airport)
Austria (a few hours passing through)
Croatia (a few hours)
Jordan (daytrip)
The Gambia (a few hours passing through)
Togo (22 hours)
Botswana (daytrip)
Paraguay (90 minutes)

Non-countries:
Transdniestr
North Cyprus
Palestine
Western Sahara

My last visited new country (Zimbabwe) was five years ago and there are no plans to add to the list any time soon.

Very impressive list there Eriol.

I'd like to ask you which were your favourite countries (or non-countries) visited on each continent. In your response, you could count North America and South America as one (i.e. 'the America's'), since the list is not as long as say for Africa or Europe.

Secondly, out of sheer curiousity (aka being a sticky-beak), how have you managed to travel so much?

Kind regards,
PM

Ooh, mine will not be impressive. And all the European locations are from one Europe trip I was lucky enough to go on in grade 12, which was about 10 days long, total.

Canada - Winnipeg (home), Edmonton, Vancouver, Vernon, Toronto, Fort Frances, plus others stopped at along the way.
United States - Grand Forks, Fargo, Minneapolis, Kansas City (spent the night), a small town in Arkansas, Salt Lake City, Burbank, New York City
Italy - Rome, Sienna, Florence
Vatican City
Monaco
France - Nice, Paris
