Please note language restrictions

Postby rdearman » Fri Nov 16, 2018 10:40 pm

There seemed to be some confusion about where non-English posts are allowed and where non-English posts must have an accompanying translation. I have therefore put a notice in all English language rooms. While we obviously encourage other languages we do have some restrictions in some areas to allow for a commonality. Having a notice in each room is easier for me than referring people to the list in the rules area.

I still don’t understand. It appears that in English subforums, posts can’t be completely non-English but can be partially non-English?

All language usage which isn't English should have a translation. However, I'd probably give some words and phrases a "pass". For example if someone used. "Merci" or "Ciao", or some phrase which I feel a large number of people should understand. E.g. if you use the phrase cul-de-sac which is used in both French and English, I'd give that a pass too.

It is at the moderators discretion what action they take. They might give the post a pass if it is something which they don't feel causes a problem with the meaning. They might also, as I've done, PM the member and ask them to provide a translation. Or they might publicly point out the issue in a thread for everyone to see and publicly ask the member for a translation.

Each post is evaluated on a case-by-case basis by the moderator who reads the post, or the report about the post.

I tick the update-me option but I’m never updated, and I rarely see action on my reports. How do I know if I’ve been reporting things correctly or incorrectly?

I have never been able to find anything to tell people that their reports have been read. There doesn't seem to be an acknowledgement option on the report. All I can do is read it and close it. But your reports are coming through.

Maybe this has to do with the general issue regarding the notifications? Basically seems like you need to mark them as read every now and then.
If there's no other problem with the post you can also contact the OP yourself.
