2018 - Summary of week 45

Fewer and fewer languages these days...

CA: 28th week of Catalan - 27980 reps.

DE: I finished FSI German Headstart. A lot of military vocabulary at the end.

GD: 29st week of Gaelic - 28940 reps.

TN: Daily Memrise sessions. Still #1!

The week started with me reading the last ~100 pages of a Swedish crime novel. I also picked up a new one (500+ pages) which I finished in a couple of days. One biography (nearly 400 pages) about a Swedish paleontologist in China in the early 20th century (I finished the book in less than 24 hours). Over a thousand pages read this week.

A big surprise was that my Afrikaans speaking colleague also knows Chinese. :o

2018 - Summary of week 46

CA: 29th week of Catalan - 29030 reps.

GD: 30th week of Gaelic - 29990 reps.

IT: I started with FSI Italian Headstart. Same format, but less time devoted to the dialogues. The German counterpart had you listen to it once, then go through it line by line (broken down in manageable segments - backwards), then say person A's lines, then person B's lines... maybe something else. I think some lessons went through the dialogue five times. In this Italian course - two times, maybe three.

TN: Daily Memrise sessions. I was #1 for a couple of days. Enter znmnky.

Four books finished this week - I typically rotate three or four books per language (SV+EN). When one is finished, I add another one to the pile. It works for me.

Languages used at work - Swedish, English and Chinese.

2018 - Summary of week 47

I'm getting lazier and lazier these days.

CA: 30th week of Catalan - 30080 reps.

DE: An impressive half-hour of listening to news at Deutschland.fm.

GD: 31th week of Gaelic - 31040 reps. Apparently, I've I reached A2. (Yeah, right.)

IT: I've almost finished FSI Italian Headstart.

TN: Almost daily Memrise sessions.

Five books finished this week - including one by David Crystal - Begat - the King James bible and the English language.

2018 - Summary of week 48

Another lazy week.

CA: 31th week of Catalan - 30980 reps. A2. Maybe passively, on a good day.

DE: Another half-hour of listening to news at Deutschland.fm.

GD: 32th week of Gaelic - 31940 reps.

IT: I finished FSI Italian Headstart.

RU: FSI Russian FAST course.

TN: Almost daily Memrise sessions. Who knows for how long I'll stick to this language.

Three books finished this week. I think I have eight books on rotation. Some of them will be finished tomorrow, then I'll add something new.

A recent topic turned into a discussion about internalization vs. memorization, with the Assimil material in mind. I've always thought that any kind of memorization of that material is unintentional and happens by accident, especially if you apply a global approach, Arguelles style. As a musician (in an Irish trad context), I've never really thought of memorizing music. You may have go through a piece a number of times in order for it to "stick" (at your level), but then you'll review it, revise it, play it in different settings, at different speeds, in different "styles"... A bunch of musicians who play the same tune may interpret the melody in their own ways, the notes may even differ here and there, but it's still the same tune - and everyone is correct. That's like the old example of being able to tell a joke even if you don't use the same words every time.

Memorizing is similar to uttering canned phrases. Some memorize music and still totally miss the point. Others internalize it and are able to adapt and adopt, like we do while conversing - in our native languages as well as our target languages.

We all know the difference between:
1 blurting out a phrase you remember
2 saying something you've actually put together yourself

I know when I level up.

Jeff, I don't remember, but you don't really use Gutamål, do you? I am sure I have heard you go on about it, especially when I visited your library.

No, I don't speak Gutamål. My skills are only receptive. Pure Gutamål is spoken mostly in pockets on Gotland, and rarely written (although it is highly encouraged - there's even a yearly contest). Two main varieties: one northern and one southern. For the outsider, the main difference is the prosody. Both have a two pitch accent system, but they're manifested differently (as is the case with dialects or regional accents in Norwegian and Swedish). Other differences are vocabulary and grammar (to some extent).

2018 - Summary of week 49

CA: 32th week of Catalan - 32030 reps. I also listened to Radio Catalunya for 30 minutes. Then four podcasts in rapid Catalan accompanied me during my walks.

DE: Another half-hour of listening to news at Deutschland.fm.

GD: 33th week of Gaelic - 32990 reps.

NO: I listened to the remaining five episodes of Clue.

RU: I finished FSI Russian FAST course.

TN: Almost daily Memrise sessions. Time for a break.

Seven books finished this week - three in Swedish, three in English the day after, and another one in English earlier today.

A new week, and time for more languages. I'm officially on holiday now.

2018 - Summary of week 50

CA: 33th week of Catalan - 33080 reps.

DA: I felt it was time to expose myself to Danish during my walks, so I went to Dr.dk and found - Når jeg savner min far (by Alberte Winding). It's a short book, just a couple of hours, so I finished it a few days ago, and then started over immediately with a lot better comprehension.

DE: Daily scriptorium sessions, based on Assimil New German with Ease. 30 minutes in the day, another 30 minutes in the evening. A recent topic about writing reminded me that my handwriting has changed. Maybe not due to multiple languages, but rather the skill itself. Ever so often, something happens with the first letter of the word (as if there's some Irish mutation going on). Anyway, no wrist pain anymore. I think it's wise to limit the sessions to 30 minutes.

GD: 34th week of Gaelic - 34040 reps.

Ten books finished this week: three in English, five in Swedish (including one about language politics), one Swedish audiobook and then the Danish audiobook. Any crime fiction? Yes, two in Swedish.

I wonder whether the entries for that competition are published anywhere? So far the only Gutnish I have read is from Medieval sources on the internet, and presumably the language has changed a bit since the Gutasaga was written.

They publish a booklet (~20 pages) with the top contributions. It's usually available at the major gatherings. Unfortunately, the texts aren't published online.
