17 Minutes language program?

Postby donJhon » Wed Aug 05, 2015 3:04 pm

Has anyone here tried this for any language? http://en-us.17-minute-languages.com/

It sounds like a Memrise meets Duolingo plus whatever. I was thinking about starting Catalan and there does not seem to be a lot of resources for it so maybe $30 would not be a huge cost to try it if it gets me started since I probably will not do more than thirty minutes per day.

I was looking for people who've actually used the program. I saw the founder's Facebook page (22,000 likes) but only one comment by anyone other than the group founder in all the posts and only a couple of people "like" each language learning post. The Memrise Facebook page has people commenting and sharing pretty much every post.

It seems (at least to me) that if this was an active learning site there'd be people making comments somewhere.

He, von Udo Gollub, seems to have a number of German based software language learning programs on Amazon.de as well as on some Swiss outlets. Some have a number of reviews that are mostly favourable so he may not be a complete newcomer and the website courses may be based on those but the website seems to be aimed at the North-American English speaking audience and is priced in USD. On Amazon.com his book and language products are in German also so maybe the web based programs are very new and do not have a following as yet.

I would prefer not be a tester for something untried, so will wait and see.

I saw this site again thanks to @Xmmm. Three years later, does anyone have any insight into how their stuff works?

Thought you might like to know that there is a Duolingo Catalan course if you set your language settings to Spanish.

I found some Trust Pilot reviews in French in addition to the old HTLAL posts, but other than that there doesn't seem to be any info. Thanks for hunting stuff down.

I think I'll stick with my free university courses for now. ;)

Not to mention @iguanamon's masterlist in his log and this section of the forum.

I actually saw an ad for 17 minute languages and took the dive for 30 bucks last week for their German C1/C2 vocab course. The course is pretty much just a premade SRS program with circa 2005 looking graphics but I look at it as "I paid 30 bucks for a set of a few thousand advanced vocab words with SRS programming" and I think it's worth it. It doesnt have to be 17 minutes, I have no idea why they chose that number. It has other capabilities, like community and such, but I haven't messed with them too much.

Soclydeza and anyone else who has tried this site - how exportable is the vocab that you get? If I could take that data with me and use it in the SRS app of my choice, it'd be more attractive to me than having to access it through a website.

I tried to access their free demo and, not encouragingly, it didn't work in my browser at all...

I actually saw an ad for 17 minute languages and took the dive for 30 bucks last week for their German C1/C2 vocab course.

With the $30 USD payment, a learner receives all of the courses offered for that particular language. German, for example, has beginner, intermediate, proficiency vocabulary (C1/C2), business, and travel courses.

Thirty-five languages go up to C1/C2, seven up to B1/B2, and four are only A1/A2. There are quite a few low-resourced languages that up to C1/C2, like Tunisian Arabic. 17 Minute Languages claims a 31 day, 100% refund policy.

EDIT: I checked the website less than 48 hours after making this post and the $30 promotion appears to be over. I recommend checking the site weekly between now and New Year's Day to see if the promotion returns. Many language learning course companies have sales between October and the first of the year.
