Theoretically, there is another African country with Spanish as it's official language - Western Sahara. However, it is currently under Moroccan control.
As for the Spanish/French combination, I always thought that Andorra is Spanish-French bilingual. Apparently, Catalan is the only official language there. Moreover, it is the only country in which Catalan is the sole official language. I visited once Andorra long time ago and I still remember the fact that the country is governed by two princes: the president of France and a Spanish bishop. But it seams that French is spoken only by 5% of African immigrants.
Are you learning also Spanish? The French Pyrenees sound great, just add Basque instead of Spanish. Thank you for your comments - my log desperately needs more interaction.
I’m doubtful much Spanish is in use on the ground in Western Sahara, although I’ve done no digging on it.
Have you noticed the two Spanish indepenent cities (?towns) of Ceuta and Melilla on the Moroccan coast?
As for Andorra and French... were you to reside in Pas de la Casa situated just inside the border with France, but on the Andorran side, I believe the population would be much more inclined to speak French, and it may even be the majority language. Unfortunately the place dorsn’t look very interesting, however.
I didn’t know that about the country being governed by two princes!
Despite not being official there’s a good percentage of Spanish spoken in Andorra (from what I read, I’ve not visited as you have), and Portuguese I think remains quite relevant too, particularly among Portuguese and Brazilian immigrants.
Another peculiarity is the Spanish exclave of Llívia- a tiny piece of Catalan speaking Spain on the French side of the Pyrenees, surrounded by French territory. I’ve written about this one before on the forum, but it’s worth another mention, I think.
No, I’m not currently learning Spanish, but I have in the past and intend to do so again some day. For now I’m targeting DALF C1 in November. Basque is not on my short list at this stage. How’s your French studies going?
