Well, I can now confirm the 6 Week Challenge really helped. Had Russian class again last night (the second one this semester), and we had to do an impromptu presentation. No one was prepared so we all just read our self written essay in front of the class, but reading it went fairly fluently and without too much pain :D A mini victory and a clear improvement from before. I also notice that my speaking has improved in general. (And my essay only had one logical mistake, so that's going well too)

Besides that, I'm super busy so language studying is (as expected) at minimum effort level. I was eager to get back to Ainu but I don't even have time for that. Too many things going on, and I'm so tired I'm in bed by 9 every day  I'm having fun though, it's a good kind of busy.

My Russian-Dutch language exchange suffers from it though :(

Still super busy, and basically functioning on energy saver mode

I volunteered at a Japanese film festival this weekend, which was great fun and gave me the opportunity to speak plenty of Japanese. And of course I watched a bunch of Japanese movies.

My highlight was Recall (空飛ぶタイヤ). The premise sounds boring but the movie is so, so good. Excellent legal thriller.
Mary and the Witch's Flower (メアリと魔女の花) was alright, not spectacular but fun enough.
Same goes for Blank 13 (ブランク 13) (although I can't say it was 'fun').
Of Love and Law (愛と法) was a very interesting documentary that ended up being less about LGBT+ rights and more about law in general. I didn't realise ろくでなし子 was going to be in it though so that was extra interesting (she's the lady who got sued for her 'obscene' vagina art).
River's Edge (リバーズ・エッジ) was chaotic but honestly exactly the type of Japanese movie I like
Room Laundering (ルームロンダリング) was really really nice! I had zero expectations but I ended up liking it a lot :) It was sweet and I may or may not have shed a tear or two.

Question: are there many documentaries on LGBT+ stuff in Japan? It interests me, as you very well know, as I don't really know how to handle Japan in this context. You're probably better suited to tell me that.

(Actually, there's a few other questions I need to ask you about Leiden university, but that's a private matter and I'll contact you later this week about it. I'm not sure whether you know, but you just might, as I haven't had dealings with Leiden in years but there's some formalities I need to sort out with them).

There are, but they are generally hard to come by and I haven't seen many myself. I'll make a list this week (and start hunting them down, since obviously I'm also interested).

Generally speaking, Japan is a pretty good place to be when you're part of the LGBT+ community - as a visitor/tourist/shorttimer, at least. There is little to no open hostility/discrimination, and most people genuinely don't care. Mostly they are super accepting when it comes to strangers, acquaintances and (close) friends.

But there is definitely a different standard for foreigners than there is for natives. Also for famous people: there are plenty of LGBT+ people to be seen on television, in talk shows, etc. and they are generally loved and appreciated - but they are also for the most part forced into certain ahem stereotypes. Also, laws regarding LGBT+ issues aren't so great yet. There is little to no protection, and discrimination (open or not) at work and by family isn't rare. Mostly this turns into social exclusion.
But even in Japan things are changing and becoming more and more accepting, and many people are actively trying to change current policies. Multiple cities/city districts have started recognising same-sex relationships for example, and are now issuing partnership certificates. Things are moving relatively fast in recent years, but there is also some push back from the LDP, the political party that has been in power almost non-stop since 1955. Your average conservative old-men party, basically

Oh my. Well, can't say I am surprised at that. Japan...well, it's definitely a country I still really need to visit. (I didn't manage to get there on my last trip to Asia). I knew that LGBT+ rights weren't that well protected in Japan (Taiwan is the best in Asia, as I recall), but I remember it being better than for example South Korea (because of their sudden conversion to evangelical Christian sects... brrr). But good to know that if I ever go there, nobody's going to hunt me down and kill me.

Anyway, please do hunt them down, and we'll organise a Japanese LGBT movie soirée for the forum or elsewhere  And I'll find a way to somehow get my hands on vegan sushi. xD

Goddamnit I need to do more queer things

Queering up my own log  I'm still hunting down those documentaries, but for now:

There are a ton of links to other interesting videos in the description (but steer clear of the comments  )
