I'm working on a new website for learning languages. Right now there are 4 tools: language exchange chat(free), forum(free), essay correction(free) and teaching (pay). Nice site, but right now it is empty of users. You're going to have to focus a lot of effort on that.

Looks nice, but I don't see what it does that's not done already by other sites: there are more than enough language partner and tutor sites out there already! I know that competition is healthy, but as an end user it's not helpful to have to join several sites because the user base is split between them, and I'm not signing up to yet another unless it either does something the others don't do or has a healthy number of users who speak my target language(s). The forum part just looks like a clone of this site minus the users, and despite their faults LL.org and its predecessor HTLAL are the only language learning forums I've found that have remotely interesting discussions (although Polydog was fun before it got all weird). The reading tool again sounds like something already offered by other sites (Lingq, LWT, etc.).

What did you learn from your Polydog experience and how do you think your new venture will benefit from having had that experience?

I’m glad you asked this question, because it really made me think about things. I’ve learned so much – I’m a changed man!

First, let me say that I am deeply sorry for hurting anyone in anyway on polydog.

I won’t go into much detail here because it’s very personal and maybe even boring to anyone else, but I didn’t realize how unstable I was during my polydog days. I knew something was going on, but it wasn’t until I hit rock bottom about 2 years ago that I was able to see I had a major problem that I needed to fix. Fortunately, I found mindful meditation. I learned that we all have thoughts, sometimes quite intense, and this is a good thing – it shows our minds are healthy and trying to protect us. It’s easy to get caught up in bad thoughts, but I learned a technique to train my mind to be “present”. The technique was simple, just pay attention to something physical, like breathing, and when I discover I’m thinking of something else, bring my mind back again in a friendly way. Simple, but it took a couple months to notice the benefits.

Nearly 2 years later, I’m a much happier person. I still get stressed from studying too much, and to a large extent I’m the same old me, but I smile more, laugh more and enjoy life more. I don’t much mind when someone disagrees with me online anymore. I try to answer most detailed posts that disagree with me just to be polite, but sometimes I decide to put my energy into something else.

Now I just want to do good for the language learning community, since it’s given me so much. I am also building a school on the Maasai Steppe, and any profits from the site will go into that.

Cool. Is the reading tool going to be something similar to lingq? Lingq has so many technical issues, an viable alternative would be very welcome.
