Hello, everyone! I am not a student of Modern Greek and am unlikely ever to become one. Nevertheless, I have been following the discussions surrounding this language both on the HTLAL and the LLORG for a number of years and, in the process, have been slowly building a file containing resources for the study of this language. In response to n_j_f’s request last week for suggestions, I recklessly replied that I would try to cobble together the elements of a “Modern Greek Resources” thread over the subsequent few days. Silly me!

To be honest, creating the list of resources took very little time at all. However, as a lifetime member of the OCD Club, I was incapable of simply publishing the list without adding lengthy editorial comments, an effort which absorbed a disproportional amount of time! Hey, I’m 72 and I’m not likely to change anytime soon, now am I? In any event, I have completed a goodly-portion of the list under the following discussion thread.

Modern Greek Resources (version 1.0)
https://forum.language-learners.org/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=10302

I read through your Study Group’s comments and extracted any recommendations that I thought others might appreciate seeing in the above list. Because there are so many online resources for the study of multiple languages, I left these out and, instead, have referred the reader to your Study Group. I should be able to complete the final sections of the above file over the next few days. In the meantime, you are invited to visit the thread (caveat: the editorializing rambles on … and on … and on …) and add your own comments. Ciao, for now!

PS: I was also pleased to read that some of you have had the courage to brave the DLI and FSI courses … puts hair on your chest!

Students of Modern Greek who also are interested in learning German, and who have a passion for vintage language-learning materials, can fulfill their ultimate linguist fantasies through the acquisition of the course below. At only £25.00, this baby is a give-away. Take my word for it, I very nearly bought it myself!

Hi all, I hope your greek studies are going well..

I would like to associate to course studying some videos to watch.. something that it is not a language course but possibly some sort of simplified short story or similar.. something (vaguely) enjoyable, but aimed at foreigners and language students which have a limited vocabulary and comprehension skills. I am really struggling to find anything at beginner level though..

I am wondering if any of you has found/used this type of material before?

After several months of blood, sweat and tears I've managed to complete the LT course and wanted to share my thoughts. First off, I feel pleased to have persevered and made it through, despite a couple of longish breaks and repeating sections. This was due mainly to the fact that I am actively maintaining other languages alongside learning Greek.

I enjoyed most of the course and feel that I have successfully acquired a solid base from which to really start LEARNING the language now. Previously I completed the Michel Thomas courses. Today I had my first ever italki lesson and it was very hard work! What is lacking of course is a decent vocabulary and despite being able to understand the Genitive and the Subjunctive, I can't actually count to 10 in Greek!

So...I've signed up to Linq for a month and will listen and read intensively. On top of that I'll aim to build a basic vocabulary core over the coming months and have formal lessons on italki. The teacher is going to send me some reading texts/vocabulary in advance of the lesson about pre-determined topics, so that structure/support will be really helpful initially.

If anyone has any suggestions or advice I'd love to hear from you!

Hi everyone! We're approaching 2020 and many of us are making plans for the new year, so I thought it would maybe be nice for us modern Greek learners to say a quick hi to each other here and see how many of us there are at the moment.

Why not leave a brief message here if you're planning to study / work on / use / even admire from a distance Greek during 2020 ... in Greek would be fun but English is fine too. ;)

English translation:
How are you? I am fine.

I don't know Greek, I am learning Greek. I want to learn the good, the bad, and the ugly. And about turtles, ducks, and elephants. Sorry, I am reading "The Greatest Treasure" and other children's stories.

This is my first time to write Greek. I write like a child. Why? I am learning Greek!

Soon I will start a log (as in tree log or stump). Wait, a log? No no! A journal. I think.

All mistakes are my own. I welcome corrections, and adverbs and prepositions.

Thanks. All the best!

My plans for Modern Greek in 2020 include:
1. Finish Greek Language Transfer (120 lessons), currently around 20
2. Continue with ClozeMaster (currently have a 78 day streak)
3. Continue with Duolingo
4. Continue reading short stories
5. Read at least one book in Modern Greek

Hello all. I can not write Greek very well, unfortunately. I am studying Greek for 5 months at university, but I do not know many words and my grammar is not very good. I like Greek very much : It is a beautiful language with an immense litterature and a very interesting history.

Γειά σου Pfifltrigg. Συμφωνώ, είναι μια πάρα πολύ όμορφη γλώσσα και πολύ ενδιαφέρον. Παρατηρώ ότι χρησιμοποιείς διαφορούς τόνους στο γράψιμό σου - μαθαίνεις να γράψεις καθαρεύουσα;
