hmm.. I'm wondering if the September course will work for us too or if we should just abandon all hope lol :) I did see that the new book supposedly moved more slowly than the first.

But there's no sense crying over every mistake. You just keep on trying till you run out of cake.

Yeah, and the new book (if I have the right one) starts you out reading off of actual monuments and statues.

If anybody is interested in joining, I got confirmation from a GlyphStudy administrator that the group will start some time either in late September or in October, even if the new section isn't officially announced yet.

Hello!

Just found out the group that we did Middle Egyptian with two years ago is about to start a Coptic section, using Lambden's Introduction to Sahidic Coptic. I couldn't resist. And why not? Many of you manage to work more than one language at a time. Why can't I?

If anyone is interested in working on Coptic with me, I can forward you the info. Just PM me or reply in here. The class starts may 4th and homework will be due every other Sunday (so 15 May first homework). You need the book. Oh, and the class is free and if this class will be anything like the other GlyphStudy groups have been, it'll be moderated/led by a person who actually knows what they're talking about! And if we get more than just me participating, I'll create a Coptic Study Group!

I forgot that the GlyphStudy group has changed from Yahoo to Groups.io. I linked it there in the first sentence. I think you have to be a member to see the messages. Easy to join the group. Then within the messages if you look under #Hashtags for #Coptic20, you'll find the thread about signing up for the Coptic course. Again, if anyone else here signs up, we can start a new group in this sub-forum.

I signed up for the Coptic course, by the way. Interestingly, "Karen" remembered that I was the same guy that inquired about Collier and Manley back in 2018, even if I ended up not joining that in the end. :)

Re: Egyptian (Hieroglyph) Study Group

The Oriental Institute is holding weekly youtube lectures on ancient languages, starting today at 14:00 central time (Chicago time).

This video will go live on Sunday, May 10 at 2:00 PM CST.

In our first ancient languages seminar, Foy Scalf, head of the OI Research Archives, discusses ancient Egyptian languages and the Hieroglyphic writing system.

Each Sunday in May, we offer free, at-home seminars examining aspects of the ancient languages studied at the OI. If you miss the video when it goes live, you can always watch at your leisure. Next week, Brian Muhs, associate professor of Egyptology, discusses Meroitic. The link for our next seminar will be available Friday, May 15.

I'm going to check it out today.
