Esperanto Study Group

Postby Radioclare » Sat Jan 07, 2017 11:35 am

Due to popular demand, I have created an Esperanto study group :)

Everyone is welcome, whether you speak fluent Esperanto or are just considering dabbling a little in the language.

Please feel free to share your thoughts and experiences in this thread and support one another. Also to post any questions you have about Esperanto and update us on your progress. If you want to give a brief introduction below (either in Esperanto or in English) about how/why you started learning Esperanto, that would also be cool.

I have shamelessly copied the list of Esperanto resources from the 2016 TAC thread below. Do let me know if you find any other good resources which could be added to list (or if you notice anything I've linked to becomes out of date and disappears!).

Resources for learning Esperanto

Free online courses
Duolingo - Esperanto for English speakers
Duolingo - Esperanto for Spanish speakers (the Spanish course is still hatching, but you can keep an eye on progress there)

Ĉu oni rajtas skribi nun? :?

Pli bone esti eterna progresanto ol eterna komencanto! Tamen laŭ tiu teksto mi opinias ke vi jam estas progresinto :)

Mi mem lernis Esperanton antaŭ pli ol dek jaroj.

By the way it's fine if people want to introduce themselves in English. If anyone needs a translation of something that's been written in Esperanto, just let us know. We definitely don't have a "ne krokodilu" rule here

I'm glad to see an Esperanto group here.

I've been curious about the language for many years and had a few false starts until I started with Duolingo a couple of months ago. I've been working through it very slowly but I hope to be ready to start writing or talking within a month or so.

I recently came across this: http://edukado.net/ekparolu/prezento It looks like they will pair up novices with experienced Esperantistoj.

Could I plug https://cantr.net as a great (very alternative) way to learn Esperanto?!

My other post is awaiting moderator approval, but here's the short version - Cantr.net is, first and foremost, a text-based role-playing game. That means, it's a collaborative story (or novel!) written by the players with constraints made by the game (e.g. you can't suddenly appear halfway across the world, nor can you build a house in an hour).

Here's the interesting part - you can create a character with a different language. So, we have a lot of people who are joining the game to learn an alternative language. It's apparently a fantastic way to immerse themselves in another language with other learners or fluents.

So you can kinda have fun, while also studying, and also enjoying a "book", while participating in creating the story!

You're too kind :)

Ok esperantistoj, I have a problem. I tried to book the weekend of the Brita Esperanto Kongreso off work and it was rejected, because too many people already requested the Sunday. This, of course, means I can't go, unless I miraculously end up having the Sunday off anyway (which I won't know until the week before, due to our new rota system :x).

Now, I really want to go to at least one Esperanto event this year, to put my skills to the test ;) but I'm a bit spoilt for choice, and I don't know what to do. I had thought about going to a Spanish or Italian Esperanto gathering to kill two birds with one stone, and I am also interested in that summer Esperanto course Clare mentioned on IronMike's log (I think), but I am not sure I want to go all the way to Slovakia... :?

Does anyone have any ideas/recommendations?

That sounds like a rubbish rota system :(

The SES event is supposed to be really good so I'm recommending it to everybody :) We were hoping to organise a series of beginners courses in the UK which would culminate with a group trip to SES, but not sure that is going to come to fruition this year; maybe not until next year.

Normally I would recommend the Internacia Junulara Kongreso, but this year it's in Togo which would definitely be a long way to go! As a result, I'm guessing that a lot of young people will be going to the IJS in Hungary instead this year, so that might be one to consider.

If you're interested in Italy then the Itala Kongreso is reported to be one of the best national ones. There is also a youth event which takes place in Italy every Easter called the IJF. I think both these events are good so long as you accept that there is an 'Italian' approach to organisation and that the things on the programme don't always start exactly when they are supposed to, especially in the mornings

Trust me, the less said about how terrible our rota system is, the better.

Thanks for your recommendations, Clare. I'll find out when all of the various events are taking place and then match them up with my work's holiday calendar to find out when I'll be able to get time off. That might end up being the deciding factor...

Regarding the 'sumoo' that was mentioned on the TAC thread, I gave decided to not officially participate, because I know I won't be able to read a certain amount every day and I don't want to set myself up to fail. However, I will be setting myself a reading challenge for the 15 days that the sumoo lasts (if I understood the website correctly). My plan is to finish both the Esperanto grammar book I am currently reading and the EO translation of Harry Potter 1 by 22nd January.

If you really want an out of the box alternative, how about the 10th Middle Eastern/1st Caucasian E-o Conference, 31 Mar-3 Apr in Georgia? If you're interested, let me know. My daughter and I are going!
