There is no formal subscription. You just post here, and you are a member already. At least it was told me some time ago ;)

Hello and  مرحبا!

I just discovered this little thread so I thought I would be joining!

I’ve been learning Arabic for 4 months now (2 months of fusha and 2 months of Levantine Arabic) and next year the goal is to learn Persian so I guess I’m in a good place.

Anyone else learning Levantine Arabic? Would be more than happy to exchange experiences and tips ;)

Hello,
in case anyone is still around: I'm learning Arabic, too :)
Trying for MSA, but it's rather a mix with Tunisian ;)

Hey happy studies everybody! What are some of the go-to beginner resources for Persian? I see there’s a DLI course but I can never figure out how to actually use those darn things.

Persian has a lot of resources.

Beginner Resources
- Teach Yourself by Mace (older version)
- Assimil
- Complete Persian (TY) (newer version)
- Colloquial Persian - Routledge - Rafiee
- Chai & Persian - podcast
- U of T Austin website and program

I posted about the Persian DLI course here and used it for some time. I wouldn't recommend it to a beginner, if only because there is no audio for lessons 1-18.

Assimil worked really well for me the first time I tackled Persian and knew absolutely nothing about the language. I'm not sure it exists in any other base than French though.

Thanks for the response! Seems the Assimil is only available in French (naturally) which is a shame for me. I’ve heard good things about the TY series so maybe I’ll look into those ones. I’ve read up on some materials for Spanish speakers but I can’t get a good feel for their quality.

Thanks again!

You're welcome!

If you can, have a look at Routledge's Farsi shirin ast. I haven't used it but it looks decent enough so maybe you'll like it. No phonetic transcription is provided for vocab though, which may be annoying for someone learning on his own.

Also, if you're interested in Dari (Persian as spoken in Afghanistan), DLI has a massive course for it. Contrary to other DLI courses available online, it's recent enough (mid-2000s) and very user-friendly.

Oh very cool, and no I don’t have a focus as far as specific variety is concerned. To be honest I don’t know much about the language or culture, just that just about every language learner I’ve spoken to, listened to, or read up on who’s studied the language seems to adore it. I guess I’m just curious and don’t have any concrete goals per se.
