@Mork - Thanks for the warm welcome
Although you all most probably know the site, I would like to bring it again to your attention.
https://www.fun-mooc.frI've already completed two courses,
Vivre en France A1 and
Verdun d'hier à aujourdhui - the latter was only possible because due to the topic, they also provided transcripts in German.
Now I have subscribed to
Vivre en France B1 and two other courses:
Renforcer ses compétences orthographiques (March 27 to May 08)

could anyone recommend a French grammar textbook that would take me up to B1 level, & ideally to B2 too, but without being off-puttingly encyclopedic (& expensive), if such a thing exists.
I've been doing quite well with my vocab & conjugation recently, but am struggling a bit with stringing it all together in anything other than fairly simple sentences, so some grammar would probably be quite helpful.
any suggestions gratefully received.

If you are up to it I would suggest these books:
Grammaire Progressive du Français - The text book
Grammaire Progressive du Français Corrigés - The answer book
A couple of notes:
The book is all in French. Invest in good paperback French/English dictionary to help you read the instructions.
The answer book (corrigés) has to be purchased separately.
This was the book used in my French class.
Bon courage mon ami.
Tom

Does anyone have any recommendations for blogs or sort of news sites? I tend to go to slate.fr to find French articles to read, but I'd like some other options. I'm interested in history, cinema, culture, sexuality, gender, identity, politics... most things! I don't really want to read anything too right wing or about sport.

merci Tom.
they've got a cheek milking students for another $20 for the answer book on top of $40 for the main book!
I've ordered a £3 second-hand copy of the Bescherelle "La Grammaire Pour Tous" for now & will see how I get on with that before buying anything else.

Are there any beginners in this group?
Today I watched Rust and Bone
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2053425/ and understood like maybe 5% of the dialogue
I might start French lessons in April, I hope to get fluent-ish by June.

Salut everyone,
I'm just dropping in to say that I recently learned that a lot of Canadian television series from the 80s and 90s have been released by their distributors on Youtube, including a lot of French content. Some were originally recorded in French and some are dubbed. I'm having fun watching some nostalgic favourites like Fais-moi peur! (Are You Afraid of the Dark?) and Direction Sud (Due South) that I originally watched in English years ago.
