Interesting article about when it's permitted to use the conditional after "si": http://www.lefigaro.fr/langue-francaise/actu-des-mots/2017/12/29/37002-20171229ARTFIG00006-une-campagne-de-peta-vire-a-la-polemique-grammaticale.php

At issue is the sentence: "Si vous ne pourriez pas manger un chien, pourquoi manger une dinde?"

New word for me: capillotracté (https://fr.wiktionary.org/wiki/capillotract%C3%A9)

At the risk of being accused of doubling-posting, as the members of this group share a common interest in learning French, I would like to draw their attention to the discussion thread that I recently added to the "Language Programs and Resources" subforum:

French Today (Introductory and Lower-Intermediate Courses)

Does anyone have any experience with the French course, Objectif Express Nouvelle Édition (or its predecessor, Objectif Express) published by Hachette?

I am not sure whether it's proper to wish you all a happy new year (in French) while it's still the "old" year. Anyway...
Bonne Année!

Edited to add the link to the Hachette website.

One more quick question before the close of this year. :D
Does anybody happen to know something broadly similar to P. G. Wodehouse's Jeeves & Wooster stories? French books need not be similar in the time period, storylines or even in the absence of politics.

The only really funny french books that come to mind are the 'petit nicolas' ones.

Le chomeur de clochemerle was a funny film, and that was based on a book/series of books that I haven't read.

Good question! I hope it brings up some attractive prospects. :-)

Hi. I'm hoping to find an efficient way to learn French while running on a treadmill. I can already read ok but have very minimal comprehension ability. I'm trying to find easy to understand videos with accurate transcription subtitles. "Méthode de français avec transcriptions" is perfect for what I'm looking for in terms of a product and difficulty level: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_u5An-mw33U

Unfortunately, I cannot find many of these videos. Is anyone aware of a location where I could watch or buy all of these videos? If not, are there similar series with a similar level of ease that come with subtitles? I'm already aware of Extr@ and FIA (although I don't seem to be able to find FIA with transcription on the screen). Everything on Netflix with accurate transcription is way too difficult for me now. A long series on Netflix might work if it had accurate subtitles and had a very simple plot.

Hello, Aravinda. Bonne et heureuse année (it's already the New Year in your time zone)!

I have no direct knowledge of the Objectif Express series published by Hachette. Nevertheless, I conducted a quick search of Amazon.fr under this title and it is clear that the series is destined for instuction by a qualified instructor in a classroom setting rather than for use by independent learners. This suggests to me that the course books will be heavy on multi-coloured photographs of attractive, smiling, young people enjoying their stimulating, engaging social and professional lives and rather light on truly useful information about the language. You can expect that the accompanying audio recordings would not be even remotely useful as those from Assimil, et cetera. I am rather obviously displaying a personal bias against these types of materials.

Objectif Express -- Amazon.fr
(https://www.amazon.fr/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_c_1_16/261-8894186-2860834?__mk_fr_FR=%C3%85M%C3%85%C5%BD%C3%95%C3%91&url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=objectif+express&sprefix=objectif+express%2Caps%2C279&crid=1LTRIAME1Z3EN)

While the few Customer Reviews for this series tend to be scored in four to five star range, I was rather surprised by the following comment:

Although I fully admit to harbouring a strong bias against these types of materials, the above comment, posted by a Francophone, would cause me to be doubly shy in this case. As there is no shortage of alternatives for learning French, I would keep shopping around.

Without subtitles.

A french TV production company has put a lot of their old TV sitcoms on YouTube, "générations sitcoms" channel.

They don't come with subtitles, but they are very long running shows, >100 episodes so lots of time to get used to the characters and their voices.

"Hélène et les garçons" (190 episodes) was I think their biggest hit, I'm watching "Les filles d'à côte" (170 episodes).

Thank you... I'll mark these for later. Unfortunately, I can't understand anything if there are not accurate subtitles. My French is really reading only now.

I had a quick look at the book, Clochemerle That seems to fit the bill admirably. :) Must watch the movie too. Thank you.
