I came upon the site by searching text from the transcript of a charmed ep on hypnoseries https://www.hypnoweb.net/ hypnoseries only had transcripts for some eps. learning french from charmed using the transcript, gaming mouse, potplayer, autohotkey, officelibre calc, anki, subs2srs (to generate audio for listening to the eps and not to make subs2srs anki cards since there aren't any french subs that match the french dub. I watch the eps in English before learning from the show using potplayer) has been great.

If LLORG gave stars, I would give this post 5 stars. In an earlier post you referenced someone using a gaming mouse, but I lost that bookmark and forgot the OPs name. I have never seen anyone here or anyone else talk about using gaming mouses in this way, but here you give a reference on how to go about using the gaming mouse to append to a text file. Thank you a bunch.

I love the efficiency too! well I never would've done it if I didn't come across the post by suko who deleted all her/his posts for some reason. https://forum.language-learners.org/vie ... 5&start=60 he/she shared a bunch of authotkey scripts and one of them was for appending text to a txt file.

I'm going to try making clozes for single words (sometimes I wrap a phrase or a sentence instead of a single word) since clozes work well for Korean. Using excel I'm gonna make 2 clozes by clozing out the first syllable of the french word and the first 2 syllables of the english definition/ translation of the word with 2 clozes. It's kinda like reversed card in anki but much easier... The text extract code is a life-saver. So the card will have the sentence and the translation on the front. Up until now, I was just making cards with sentence and translation/definition on the front with the word and words of the definition bold and huge .

Ah, to OP was Suko, yes. There is no date given for their last visit, a very few posts and some attachments have not been deleted: the mods, maybe?
Anyway, very useful stuff, and yours as well. I will deciper the code (and will have to get a gaming mouse). As well thanks for the stuff about Charmed.

I definitely need guidance on how to go about buying books in French from stores other than Amazon. For a host of reasons I am trying to cut back on purchases of books from Amazon, however, I find it difficult to find an alternative.
Below is an example of just a few of the books that I have read and their availability status thru retailers other than Amazon:

La nuit de feu Éric-Emmanuel Schmitt
Powells books -Nothing
Schoenhof's Foreign Books-Nothing
Half Price Books-Nothing

Une pièce montée Blandine Le Callet
Powells books - out of stock
Schoenhof's Foreign Books Nothing
Half Price Books -Nothing

La délicatesse David Foenkinos
Powells-Yes
Schoenhof's Foreign Books Nothing
Half Price Books -Nothing

These books are not esoteric, but rather are popular books by contemporary French fiction writers.

So does anyone have ideas of any retailer here in the US that I could go to for my books in French?

Thanks.

You could use abebooks.com to search for a retailer nearby, then approach the retailer directly.

Well, I searched for all 3 books at that URL and they had them all.
Thanks so much.

Carmody, just to be clear, if you don't want to buy books from Amazon, you wouldn't want to buy via the Abebooks website, as that is owned by Amazon, you'd want to contact the retailers directly.

I know you have asked for US-based, but if you’re ever curious, try the French site https://www.fnac.com/ (if you don’t know it already). I don’t know how it compares to US prices after importing, but here in Australia I’m left with few options after amazon.fr (and other amazon sites) refuses to sell to Australian customers but redirects to the amazon.com.au site which either charges through the roof or has very little available. Fnac has been super reliable and has an extensive range, but like I said, after importing, I just don’t know how it would compare price-wise in the U.S.

1. Barnes and Noble: https://www.barnesandnoble.com/
More expensive than Amazon, but a membership gives free shipping (but still usually not cheaper than A.)
2. Gallimard's site in Montreal: https://www.gallimardmontreal.com/
Even though it is Canada, import and shipping can be expensive. Confined I think to house titles. Maybe cheaper for you to just drive up there.
3. Bookdepository: https://www.bookdepository.com/
In the UK but with shipping always free. Not the widest selections for French, though.

There is always an international surcharge on many credit cards. I don't know any which do not charge extra, but I think there are some.

My go-to of the three booksellers above is usually Barnes and Noble.

Thanks for the useful info folks.

Yes, I just discovered:
AbeBooks has been a subsidiary of Amazon since 2008.

I guess there is always bookfinder:
https://www.bookfinder.com/?ref=bf_s3_hd_1

or

Biblio

https://www.biblio.com

Note:
This past week I was buying shoes online through Zappos and then discovered afterwards that they too are owned by Amazon.

Scary............. :o
