Re: French Group 2016 - Les Voyageurs
Hi Tom, I just signed up to be a Wanderluster, but one of my wanderlust languages is French.
My short-term goal is to have some basic conversational fluency by the late January - beginning of February. Just want to have basic conversation phrases down and be able to answer standard questions. This is my log link: viewtopic.php?f=15&t=1817
Cheers!

If I make spelling mistakes, Or if I construct a sentence that doesn't sound natural, please quote me and suggest a more "natural" sounding phrase. I might post audio vocaroos, so I appreciate commentary on my accent. I welcome any criticism.

passé composé or past participle ?
If I want to say, "Today, I studied French," would I use the passé composé, the past participle, or the imparfait ? Merci pour votre aide.
Passé composé: « Aujourd'hui, j'ai étudié le français ».
Past Participle: « Aujourd'hui, je étudié le français ».
Imparfait: « Aujourd'hui, j' étudiais le français ».
Passé composé: « Aujourd'hui, j'ai étudié le français ».
Past Participle: « Aujourd'hui, je étudié le français ».
Imparfait: « Aujourd'hui, j' étudiais le français ».

In this case, I would use the passe compose. Past participle does not exist in French.

I'm pretty sure it does. If I use le participe passé, I think I should write, Aujourd'hui, je été étudié le français.
EDIT: Or, should I write Aujourd'hui, j'été étudié le français. My cerebral processor is not working tonight.

I'm sorry, tomgosse. You are right. Past participle exist in French, of course, but in this construction you have proposed, I believe you should use the passe compose (first sentence).
The second sentence is grammatically incorrect, I think.

Re: French Group 2016 - Les Voyageurs
Since I am new here, I have a lot to learn about making my way around.
For starters I would like to set up the learners bar graphs for my study plan but am not sure where I go to do so. Could you advise?
At the moment I am planning a daily sched. of:
45min-vocabulary
20 min - reading and listening
45min-grammar
At the moment my vocab is based on reading of Huff Post, Le Figaro, and Le Monde in French for 45. From that I draw vocab words that I put on flash cards.
I am using flash cards from Quizlet
My listening is from several sources:
-audiobooks
-rfi, Fr.
-etc.
I am bldg towards taking a class at Alliance Francaise in March.
I have followed this sched for the past month.
Can you tell me where those graphs or bar charts are?
Thanks.

Imparfait: « Aujourd'hui, j' étudiais le français ».
You would use the passé composé
Aujourd'hui, j'ai étudié le français
If you wanted to say "I was studying French when you called me" you would combine the imparfait with the passé composé like so:
J'étudiais le français quand tu m'as appelé
The past participle étudié cannot be used on its own. It is part of the passé composé and other compound tenses.
