Book lists.
I spent a little while this morning trying to find a list of recommended books for children sorted by age groups on the French gov ministry of education website. I didn't find what I wanted, but I did get a link to some on the French national library website.

I've just come across a website that looks useful "Une dictée par jour".

It certainly has a lot of information. I'm not sure how to use it. :?

Note:
the website une dictée par jour is for beginners, so if you are not a beginner do not waste your time with the following explanation of the website. I am a beginner and find the website very professional but it is still in its infancy, as am I with my French.

I can figure out bits and pieces of the site that are probably obvious to people, but other parts remain too obscure for me to track down. Maybe if I list what I do and don’t know about the website structure others can add or correct based on their knowledge of it.

What I don’t know:

-I don’t know the meaning of the S1->E1 designation; from children to adolescents?

The people developing this site love to sort the dictées into many different groupings:

-the color coding indicates skill level: green, red, blue, black? Which they say comes from skiing.

- there is a listing for all the dictées under the Voir toutes les dictées tab and another tab Voir tous les parcours by themes

-they are divided also into different themes such as sports and games, adventure, childhood and adolescence, etc.

-they are also divided by grammatical areas of focus: passé simple, agreements of the verb with subject, etc.

-the dictées are also divided into four seasons under Les dictées tab. Only Spring and Summer have dictées loaded at this time.

To use the site:
-I go to "Les dictées" and choose a dictée from one of the 2 Saisons and from that
-Go to Voir La Dictée tab and play it
-Then after going through the dictée
-I go to La correction en vidéo- which appears quite thorough. This is the part that amazes me with its thoroughness.
-Then if I choose to, I go to the Le texte de la dictée tab.

In addition to the thoroughness of the grammatical explanations for a dictée what amazes me is the clarity of the speakers as they deliver the dictées.

I hope this is of some help; maybe we should have a special thread on this since this theme could get quite lengthy and bore the majority of the members of the group.

parler à bâtons rompus > chat idly, meandering conversation
rompre les chiens > change the subject

I was browsing the phrases related to Tomber on forvo.com, and I could not find the meaning to this phrase:

Tomber les voiles

The best I could find was "drop the sails"?

My understanding of the expressions "tomber les voiles" or "faire tomber les voiles" is that their literal sense dates from the Age of Sail for which the English equivalent would be "lower the sails" or something very similar. However, there is a figurative sense which alludes to the concealing/masking nature of sails, veils, masks, and the like, wherein "tomber les voiles (used in the singular or the plural) suggests the demasking of something concealed, the revealing of a hidden truth, et cetera.
