I read Joël Dicker's Harry Quebert in Swedish and it was one of my favourite books that year. Like Twin Peaks, but without the supernatural stuff. :)

I'm always reluctant to post about books I've enjoyed but here are two I read a couple of months ago and found rather interesting:
- Boualem Sansal, 2084 : la fin du monde (2015). A not so thinly veiled criticism of religious absolutism (in an Islamic inspired guise) set in a distant future. A bit heavy-handed at times but enjoyable overall
- Mathias Énard, Parle-leur de batailles, de rois et d'éléphants (2010). What if Michelangelo had been in Istanbul in 1506 to build a bridge?

France Culture has produced a very nice series on raï, an Algerian musical genre. I caught the third episode live at the same time I was reading Sansal's 2084, which made for a nice Algerian themed couple of days.
Based on this episode alone, it seems to me that the author has done very nice job interweaving Algerian and raï's history. I knew a bit about Algeria's décennie noire but this episode gave me a much better understanding of it.

If I recall correctly, L'élégance du hérisson is pretty accessible for intermediate learners.

Also, I'd recommend that you consider reading on a Kindle or other e-reader that has a built-in dictionary. If you need to look up a word, it's really nice to be able to just tap the screen rather than break the flow of reading to switch to a dictionary app on your phone.

One of the slang terms of Canadian-French I've noticed is blonde > girlfriend.

I was watching a French mini-series earlier, in one scene a family sing together "auprès de ma blonde", a French song that dates back to 1704.

The equivalent for boyfriend is 'chum'. Québécois French has some delightfully bonkers slang.
