I would like to join this group. I have been using Assimil, NFWA. Currently I am in lesson 28 and look forward to finish it and start watching French YouTubes with/without subtitles. Maybe I will do some Anki at the side, maybe not, it will depend on the roughness of the transition to native materials.

Smarter Than the Average Smat/Smatte

Recently, I complimented a cherished acquaintance of mine by saying that he was “smarter than the average smat/smatte.” Some of you may be sufficiently comfortable with Québécois slang so as to detect the intended sense of this bilingual phrasing. The word “smat”, for which an alternative spelling might be “smatte”, is a deformed Québécois pronunciation of the English “smart” denoting “nice, sympathetic, intelligent” and the like. Generally speaking, it is used as a compliment as in “elle est vraiement smat, celle-là.” However, it can be used ironically as in “C’est un vrai smat, celui-là. C’est un osti de smat!” indicating that the so-described person is “too smart for their own good.” Careful attention to context, the speaker’s tone of voice and facial expression give clues as to his/her intentions … “t’es un vrai smatte, toé-là!”, if delivered with pursed lips, should not be taken as a compliment!

I started a thread for a new language challenge which might answer some peoples' ideals for 2019 in studying consistently for the year and help achieve their Language New Year's resolutions, or just keep them accountable in studying more regularly. I'm not alone nor the first with the idea, so it's been a warm welcome for others with similar ideas for such a challenge. Links to the challenge have already been posted in a few spots, so I thought, how could I miss posting it here with my old French learning friends and best to do so now before the New Year begins!

Here's the link:

A warm Holiday Greetings to everyone and most especially to tomgosse. Tom Goss is the man who started this Group about three years ago. He is also the person who painstakingly encouraged me with the course French In Action, which I finally did get through. And he helped me set up my French keyboard and countless other things that a Totally New Visitor like myself simply did not know. So thank you Tom for your persistent patience. I hope things are improving for you on the different medical fronts and that you have a wonder full Merry Christmas on January 7th. ;)
