Bonjour mes amis,
Rdearman wrote this post in another thread where he discusses using "language islands". I've had a hard time trying to figure out how to do this. Then I found this article from Linguacore. It explains how to create an "island" step by step. Pay special attention to the links in Section 1, Collecting Elements. I hope to start applying this during the coming week.
À bientôt,
Tom

French teachers sometimes use the "methode Borel-Maissony" when teaching small children to read. This associates hand gestures with sounds.

Thank you for this! While I have only the vaguest of memories of how reading was taught when I was young -- other than the use of the "Dick and Jane" series -- I find all this gesticulating in the videos quite distracting. Okay, it was not Tolstoy, but it was start!

Hmm. I remember Peter and Jane books, and the Village of Three Corners with Roger Red Hat, Billy Blue Hat, etc.Speakeasy wrote:Thank you for this! Trivia:
Reminder on the topic of Faux Amis:
émailler v. to enamel
émail n. enamel
email n. email
Then there is this:
-pour envoyer un e-mail
-pour envoyer un courriel
-d'envoyer un email
And yet Marcel Pagnol in his Le Château de ma mère, uses émailler as in to text an email to someone.
Any French natives about who might tell us the correct usage: email, courriel, or e-mail?
Are we talking tomatoes and tomotoes?

Not a french native, but I've just come across the following:Carmody wrote:Any French natives about who might tell us the correct usage: email, courriel, or e-mail?
From "La puce à l'oreille", ISBN: 2715813740, p.378. That's a 2002 edition, so fashions might have changed since.De la même manière, le courier électronique s'est généralisé sous son appellation d'origine e.mail, prononcé imèle sans aucun égard à la prononciation des lettres en français.

The folks at Le Monde also say e-mail. "adresse e-mail" appears in a subscription box near the bottom of the page: article from Le Monde
This online article about French email vocabulary says use courriel officially, otherwise stick with email.
