big cheeses, big shots ... big vegetables?

I'm currently reading the Man in the High Castle (Le maître du haut chateau) by Philip K Dick.

In chapter three we see:
Dans le crépuscule, en levant les yeux, Juliana Frink vit disparaître à l’ouest un point lumineux qui décrivait un arc dans le ciel. L’une de ces fusées nazies, se dit-elle. En route vers la côte du Pacifique. Pleine de grosses légumes. Et moi je suis ici, à terre.

Which pairs to:
At sunset, glancing up, Juliana Frink saw the dot of light in the sky shoot in an arc, disappear to the west. One of those Nazi rocket ships, she said to herself. Flying to the Coast. Full of big shots. And here I am down below.

Actually yes, grosse légume is an expression with the meaning of "important person". It is worth noting that légume in the meaning of "vegetable" is a masculine noun, but in this expression it is used in feminine. Check this website for an explanation.

Reading 'Joe's french and chinese log' here, I was introduced to France Inter's La Revue de presse, a podcast that comes with a script.

James29 wrote:Hello French group members. I've been moving along slowly with my French (I focus most of my time on Spanish). I'm looking for an easy to understand series on Netflix that I could use to advance my French. Right now I can read French ok. My reading level is where I could struggle through a book like Harry Potter if I looked up several words on each page. My time is my limiting factor because I don't have hardly any "study" time other than the time I spend on the treadmill everyday where I can watch Netflix. So, if any of you have any suggestions I would much appreciate it.

My ideal would be 1) a long series 2) with French audio (dubbed is ok) 3) accurate subtitles (a must for me) 4) on Netflix 5) that is easy-ish to understand.

I'm a bit late responding to this - don't come here often and just noticed your post. One French series my wife and I have watched on Netflix is "Les Revenants" - search "The Returned" and choose the French version. Two season series that was the inspiration for the one season U.S. version that was abandoned mid-stream. The French version (the original) is IMO better. A little dark (OK - maybe more than a little), but not really a zombie flick as you might think from some descriptions. Perhaps more of a supernatural mystery series....

Thanks, DaveBee.
This maybe a silly question. I am not very familiar with podcasts. How do I get the scripts? Do I need to subscribe through a RSS Reader to get them? Or is it possible to access them in iTunes? (Not likely, I guess).

They're on the website. The most recent programme doesn't have a script at the moment, but the older ones do.

NB
These are scripts, rather than transcripts, so they're not word-perfect.

The french national library (Bibliothèque nationale de France) seems to sell/licence MP3 versions of its audio (and video?) recordings.

I can't find a shop on the bnf website, but Amazon UK lists some MP3 albums from "Collection BnF" in their digital music area. Any online streaming service, or MP3 retailer you use may well include them.

EDIT
Found a page of tariffs on the BnF website. Third party retailers look like the easier option.

Canadian TV awards.

Looking at the website of a Candian TV programme I like (District 31), I noticed it had won an award: 'Zapettes d'or'.

One for Jane Austen fans.

Belgian radio programme, La raison et les sentiments de Jane Austen. (requires flash plugin)

During the programme they mention a Jane Austen event at a Brussels library, which seems to be part of a larger programme of events called "La Fuerer de lire"

EDIT
Emmanuelle Nuncq, the lady who gave one of the library talks, has published a short write-up on her blog. NERVES! :-)
