Les sacres (synonyme de jurons au Québec) québécois font partie du lexique du français québécois parlé. Ils sont pour la plupart tirés de termes ayant trait à la religion catholique. I learned just about everything on the Wikipédia list, and quite a few more, "sur le tas" whilst working in a small town in the Quebec interior. Apparently, the "bon peuple" used to hold public competitions to determine the most imaginative users of this register of speech. While, as reported in the Wikipédia article, the wellspring from which these "sacres" were drawn was the Catholic religion, the society as a whole is much more "laic" nowadays and most people would not be able to make the connection between the "sacres" and the religious artefacts, rites, and terminology from which they were derived.

This has been your "culture capsule" of the day.

Quite a number of them are present elsewhere in Canada, too. I know from hearing my franco-Manitoban dad watch hockey.

Si la chose dépend de toi, pourquoi la fais-tu? Si elle dépend d'un autre, à qui t'en prends-tu? Aux atomes ou aux Dieux? Dans les deux cas, c'est folie. - Il ne faut s'en prendre à personne. Si tu le peux, redresse le coupable. Si tu ne le peux pas, redresse au moins son acte. Mais si cela même ne se peut, à quoi de plus te sert-il de te plaindre? Car il ne faut rien faire à l'aventure.

Hello everyone,

It took me several days to read through this whole thread.
Since it is such a treasure trove of information and resources, I might have to repeat that, though.

I feel that at my current level I might not be able to contribute much, but I'd still like to join :D
My language log is https://forum.language-learners.org/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=11440.

I'm a little confused by:
On nous les tuera, malgré leur innocence.
(quote from une ténébreuse affaire)

Deepl.com translates the line as: "They will be killed, despite their innocence.", which fits the context.
Google translates the line as: "We will be killed, despite their innocence."

What is 'nous' doing here?

To understand the idea, replace the verb "to kill" by the verb "to steal" (to steal something from someone, voler qch à qn).
Nos enfants, on nous les volera puis on nous les tuera.
The people to be killed are part of a group, a family... whose narrator is part (really or in spirit)

A Public Service Announcement:

There is a A French Book Reading Resource over in the Language Programs and Resources area.

It is a place where people tell it like it is:
- what we like and don't like when it comes to French authors. No sacred cows; all authors are fair game.
- covers authors both old and new
- answer questions re who you might like to read next
- provide urls for places to go for finding more on French books
- all levels of linguistic ability are welcomed: A1-C1

All this and lots more at absolutely no cost, no tax, and with no commercial interruption.

Go through our earlier postings and discover all the French authors our members have read and what they really think of them and why.

It has been a while since my last update - I am really a terrible writer.

Together with a teacher, I worked through the first chapters of EDITO B1 and it soon became obvious, that I had already reached the B1 level. No problems in speaking and writing or grammar. That's why I decided not to take the DELF B1 exam, it is just not necessary anymore. Instead I will be soon in Nice and enjoy seven days at the French Riviera. This is going to be my "real" exam - putting into practice what I have learned so far…

Just out of curiosity I did the TCF Test Simulation on the TV5 Monde website and scored B2/C1 - which I am definitely not just after 14 months of learning French. But it gave me at least a good feeling.

In the meantime I have also settled into a new study routine for intermediate French. I always start with a dictée of 10 sentences. My anki-like -Langenscheidt-Vokabeltrainer has around 5000 (!) sentences in French/German with audio, so there is no shortage in the near future. There is a special dictation mode that shows the mistakes, very convenient.
lgs_dictation1.PNG

After the dictée I work with a short text - taken from my language journals or advanced Assimil or a graded reader - always with audio and vocab in German. I make sure, that I really understand every sentence and write some new vocab in my notebook. If I am not in the mood for text, I do some grammar or use another book - also no shortage. Additionally, I have subscribed to the B1/B2 Intermediate French course on coursera, but only as a guest - I do not want to participate actively or have any stress with deadlines.

So, that was the learning material and now to the native material for listening, watching and reading.
During my 2 x 30 min. workouts per day on the exercise bike, I listen to French radio and podcasts and watch the the daily soap "Un si grand soleil" on TV5Monde.
The evening is reading time and I am a voracious reader. Therefore, I only can do extensive/excessive reading.

What I do enjoy is, that every day one or more of the vocab from the learning sessions will pop up in the native material and that just makes me smiling each time it happens. Today one of these words was massacrant.

Because I have no actual plans or goals, I will stay with this study routine as long as I feel progress.

Yes, it is always fun when something like that happens. Where does that little joy come from, I wonder?
Very impressive regimen of study. I wish I could make better language-learning use of exercise than I do. I use a treadmill, not a bike, but I have a hard time concentrating on reading or listening even to my native language. :(
