Hi all,

I'm new to this site and still trying to work out the structure! Currently studying French A2 at French Institute in London and started by creating a study log. Anyway would be good to meet some people here, get some advice on resources etc...

There was this story on Europe 1 about the suspect for a woman who was found dismembered in a Paris park (parc des Buttes-Chaumont) and they saw fit to end the article with this:

Créé en 1867 sous Napoléon III qui voulait aérer Paris, le parc des Buttes-Chaumont est fréquenté par de nombreux joggeurs, des familles le week-end ou des fêtards qui apprécient ses bars tendance.

The tourist board probably wants to make sure people know it has other qualities.

UK TV
UK TV channel Talking Pictures (Freeview Channel 82) broadcast the first episode of Bruno Cremer's Maigret series earlier. French audio, English subtitles. The whole series is 46 film length episodes.

You can re-watch this week's episode on their catch up website tptvencore.co.uk

A couple of notes.
1. AFAIK, this link is only available in the UK and Ireland.
2. Maigret may seem "slow" compared to BIF! BAM! detective shows nowadays, but the "slowness" comes from lots and lots of dialogue, and IMHO lots and lots of dialogue is perfect for someone learning the language.

There's a funny French word for a sort of window over a door: vasistas. I heard about it several years ago in an episodes of the old podcast Balades, and as you might guess it comes from German "was ist dass?" meaning "what is that?" Apparently the word is also used the same way in both Italian and Turkish, both with the same spelling as in French.

This week I came across it in print for the first time ever, in Harry Potter a l'école des sorciers of all places:
Le vendredi, douze lettres pour Harry arrivèrent. Comme la boite aux lettres était inutilisable, elles avaient été glissées tout autour de la porte et l'une d'elles avait même été introduite à travers un vasistas dans les toilettes du rez-de-chaussée.

It is highly probable that no one is going to have time to view this entire episode, but I did and found it well worth the time:

Notre dame de Paris La fabrique du sacré. (3/3)

Ah! I watched ep.1 already on Arte's site, so I'll have to do ep.2 before getting to this one. The photography in these is excellent.

Vive le robot ! And without the fire, there would be no occasionally lyrical video. :) I noted that not everyone who should have been wearing safety glasses was wearing them. Thanks for the recommendation, Carmody.
Edit one time to add a couple comments about the video.
