In honor of the Miss Universe debacle where Miss Colombia had the crown ripped off her head and given to Miss Philippines, I present the announcement of the results for the first televised Miss France competition from 1987. Apparently poor Céleste, the guy off camera announcing the results to presenter Guy Lux, was confused about the whole 2nd place = 1st runner up thing (première dauphine) and it turned into a hilarious disaster.
You'll see among the people on stage about halfway through Geneviève de Fonetnay, longtime president of the Miss France committee with her very distinctive look in her black and white ensemble complete with matching hat and bright red lipstick.
The woman crowned Miss France is Nathalie Marquay-Pernaut who did some acting, appearing on Sous le soleil which I used to watch on TV5 Monde. I also realized that I saw her in a play in Paris, Piège a Matignon, costarring with one of her former Sous le soleil actors, Stéphane Slima who died tragically while on vacation that same year. Her husband is Jean-Pierre Pernaut, one of the country's most recognizable newscasters, presenting the Journal de 13h on TF1 since 1988 and who co-wrote the same play.
