Here is an interesting story about a Canadian couple from my local town who taught English in China. They had a very positive experience. This might motivate others to try it too.

Re: Teaching English "behind the Great Wall of China"
I know at least two people who taught English in China at various educational levels and had positive experiences (actually I think both people I'm thinking are currently there for a conference). It's not something that I have any desire to do, but that has very little to do with the fact that it's China and just about everything to do with a. specific medical needs and b. life goals.
