If you're looking for a wonderful Mediterranean vacation then I highly recommend Sardinia. There are tons of old buildings and historical sights to see in the city of Cagliari, and along the coast are some amazing coves and beaches. Many of them empty.
Public transportation is cheap, but to see the most of the island you might need to rent a car. Trains to the north of the island are about 4 hours.

Re: Sardinia, Italy
There are a lot of really small villages and small harbours for boats and yachts. Lots of churches!

Re: Sardinia, Italy
I've been in Sardinia for about a month and a half now! Just arrived in Cagliari yesterday after having seen a lot of the north and the Nuoro area. Beautiful place, although for a solo traveller it's a bit difficult and expensive to get around: public transport is not the best and there's not much low-budget accommodation (hostels etc.). I'm planning on writing a blog about my experiences and advice sooner or later, as it's been a great learning experience to me compared to more backpacker-friendly destinations like Andalusia, mainland Italy, and Southeast Asia.
