It is a joke, because it took me awhile to figure out it means "exit".

You're not the only one My father went to Europe in the 80s and experienced the same thing: "Jeez that Ausfahrt place must be massive!". It's one of the tales he's enjoyed telling over the years when recounting his trips to Europe back then. I'm somewhat envious as it was the calm before the globalisation storm, when European countries were more distinct from one another and English was not widely spoken outside of Holland and Scandanavia.

I do especially enjoy bilingual German-Sorbian town names:

Oh i'm such a blonde! (I really am though, i admit it) i really thought there was some huge exit sign, i don't really pay so much attention when i drive in Germany.
